The intent of this section is to provide a place to post openings for honors projects and part-time and summer jobs.

ContactProject Summary and Requirements
Ramani Duraiswami TOPIC: Spatial Audio
WHAT YOU NEED: Motivation, an interest in audio, in programming, math, and interested in working with actual equipment. Want a junior so that they will be around for a while.
EXTRA: If you have CS and something else (math, ee) thats a plus, but not needed.
FUNDING: Likely.
CHANCE OF PUBLISHING: Possible.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Our lab works on improving our understanding of how humans perceive the spatial location of sounds, and to harness this understanding to develop new interfaces for the blind, virtual reality systems, and methods for the capture and reproduction of sound. The honors project will be in this broad area, but specifics will be decided according to the strengths of the selected student.
Things that would be a plus are: interest in music/audio, good programming skills and a familiarity with Matlab.

ContactProject Summary and Requirements
Dr. David S. Doermann The Language and Media Processing Laboratory and the Center for Automation Research are seeking several qualified CS and EE undergraduate students to implement various multimedia analysis algorithms in support of research in document image and video processing. Research topics include video segmentation, video retrieval and multimedia and multi-lingual information extraction.

One initial project will be working on an implementation of a Java visualization interface. A student working in these areas should consider themselves experienced working in a Sun Workstations environment in C or C++. Preference will be given to students who know Java, but those who demonstrate excellence in object-oriented programming or GUI interface programming will be strongly considered.

A second project involves the creation of a video database and integration into the Informix DB. Database experience is useful.

Students are also needed for perl and html coding projects.

Semester and Summer positions available. Will train.

Michael L. Pack The Center for Advanced Transportation Technology Laboratory (CATT Lab) is looking for students to conduct research using the latest in information technology. Students are given a great deal of responsibility and freedom to expand their engineering and computer science abilities while developing and integrating usable systems and tools for the lab. ContactProject Summary and Requirements
Don DeVoe Bioinformatics is the rapidly growing field of applying programming expertise to the biological sciences. Following the success of the human genome project, perhaps the most challenging areas in bioinformatics is analysis at the next level of biological complexity: the proteome, i.e. the proteins expressed within an organism. Prof. DeVoe's group in Engineering is developing cutting-edge MEMS and microfluidic technology for proteome studies. Microfluidic (or so-called lab-on-a-chip) technology enables the generation of vast quantities of information about the proteome. To help with this project, we need a student with strong experience in MySQL and/or perl scripting. Perl is being used to parse through the vast proteome data generated, and MySQL is being used to perform complex data searches. A successful effort will result in a very real opportunity for a future internship or long-term job at a local biotechnology company collaborating on this project.
