Highlights of the Apr 03, 2003, meeting of the College Park Senate

• Clopper Almon (Prof of Economonics) presented a report of the Library Council. A number of new electronic capabilities have been implemented and are (or will soon be) available:

  Aleph: a quick way to get details on holdings, and -- when "sfx"appears next to an item -- a FREE and quick was to get full online text.

  LiveChat: get fast human feedback on reference questions from experts in your area of interest

  VBIC: "better than Google" (that's what he said)

  Digital Repository Univ Md (DRUM?): coming your way soon, for storing permanent archives of your work and migrated to newer media as they come along, after we are dead and gone.

• Voted/Approved:Change the name of the School of Architecture to "School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation"

• Voted/Approved:Change the name of the Dept of Materials and Nuclear Engineering to "Dept of Materials Science and Engineering"

• Voted/approved: Move the home of the Reliability Engineering Graduate Program to the Dept of Mechanical Engineering.

• Discussion of proposed new CORE requirements -- to be voted at the next meeting.
