Highlights of the Apr 4, 2002, meeting of the College Park Senate
A proposal to allow students to reschedule final exams when they
have more than three on a single day, was debated, amended, voted and
passed.
The amendment stated that, within one year, the Senate will consider
reformulating this policy to state "when they have more than two on a
single day." The concerns about this included that it may create
a massive bureaucratic effort to reschedule large numbers of exams,
if the "more than two" is put into place. But it was also argued that
we do not have good data on which to judge this at present. Also
the registrar had made an indication that much of the problem of
multiple finals on the same day per student could be avoided with
a centrally organized rescheduling of sections shortly after the
semester begins.
A resolution was presented by student members of the Senate, to
the effect that (i) the basketball team is to be congratulated for
its winning performance; and (ii) the (small number of) fans who
took part in dangerous and illegal behaviours after the recent games
are to be chastised in the strongest possible terms.
Special presentations by Charles Sturtz, Vice President for
Academic Affairs, who is about to retire; and by Brodie Remington,
Vice President for University Relations (and apparent mastermind of
the Zoom! UMCP publicity campaign).
