Task Force on Appointments, Promotion
and Tenure – Gerald Miller, chair
Task force has been meeting about 2.5 years so far. If there
are comments about the policy, send email
to Dr. Miller over the next few
months.
The recommendation that caused the most controversy
was the one that would prevent college-level APT committee members from
being present when their own department's candidates are discussed. People
from several departments commented on this recommendation, all saying that
it was bad - with some of the most strenuous objections coming from people
in our department. On the opposite side, several members of the task force
spoke
to defend the recommendation.
Discussion of other items in the proposal:
Comments from College APT to Dept chair should be written beforehand
so chair knows what is requested.
Only 4 external letters are required for tenure, but some departments
require as many as 10. No change to this is proposed.
The 5 small colleges
do not like raising 3rd level review committee to 9 members with
the 8 largest colleges always having a member. That
gives
the small colleges less representation on committee.
Various
concerns about other recommendations (e.g., the recommendation
pertaining to the summary report).
