Highlights of the College Park Senate meeting
on October 5, 2004
- The provost, Bill Destler, gave an address on student enrollment and retention. Here are some highlights:
- Retention rates have increased from 63% to 73%; Destler attributes this to policy changes, such as those involving advising of at-risk students. He recommends even further policy changes, such as requiring every academic unit to have a four-year plan for graduation.
- The Board of Regents anticipates an increased demand for college education due to Baby Boomers having children, and is calling for changes to accommodate a greater number of students. Enrollment will not increase much at the College Park campus, but is likely to do so at Shady Grove.
- A committee will investigate ways to better address the needs of graduate students. Another will examine policy for online courses.
- Vote on the recommendations of the APT task force: the recommendations were approved.
