Special Order of the Day: President Mote's Annual State of the Campus
address. For details of the Sept 10th version of this speech, click

Several faculty and departments received special recognition by
President Mote, including HCIL (Allison Druin was mentioned) for work
on the Children's Large Scale Digital Archive, UMIACS for receiving 7
NSF awards, the Linguistic department for its success in hiring Howard
Lasnik, computational psychology for successful hiring, and scientific
computing---newly housed in CSIC---for its recruitment of a new
director. President Mote stressed that
momentum is the key as we continue to work at the ``edges.'' He
enumerated several of our 2001-2002 successes including a 14%
increase in research funds our previous record-breaking year,
signicant success at fundrasing on campus, high rankings in numerous
departments, naming of an asteroid after Dr. Richardson in astronomy,
and ``Maryland Newsline'' (ranked #1 in student-run news broadcasting,
after only a year of operation). Final message of the day: Despite
difficult times (9/11, tornado, fiscal uncertainty), progress can be
made if we work together as a team, focusing on the continuation an
environment for good research, beautification of our campus,
diversity, and efforts in recruitment of top researchers and leaders.
