IRAM - Intelligent RAM and Databases?
Michael Franlin
Dave Patterson's group at Berkeley is looking into a new chip design
that combines a RISC processor, vector units, and 20MB to 100MB of DRAM
on a single chip. Patterson recently got a few database people together
to discuss what the implications of such a chip (or really, large clusters
of them) would be on future database systems. Unfortunately, the meeting
didn't end up talking much about those issues, but there was a lot of
interesting discussion about future computer architectures and some about
future database systems. In between bites of pizza, I'll describe what I
understand about IRAM and what some of the database-related issues might be.
