Fall 1998

Announcing: CMSC 828F: Readings in Database Systems
Time/Place: Wednesdays, 12:30-1:45, AVW 4185
Instructor: You, with some gentle prodding by Mike Franklin and others.

This is a once-a-week discussion/reading group for students, faculty and staff who are interested in examining current and emerging topics of interest in the database and information systems research world.

We will decide on a reading list during the first two meetings.

This "course" has been meeting informally as the "DB Chat" for the past year. At the request of several of the participants, we have decided to formalize the process a bit by making it an official course. Despite this new formality, you are invited to bring your lunch, and we will likely be ordering pizza etc. for anyone who is interested.

All participants will be required to present and lead the discussion for one or more papers during the course of the semester. In addition, all attendees are expected to participate vociferously in the discussions. There will be no exams or projects. Lunch will be optional, but be advised that bringing good desserts for everyone certainly won't do any harm to your grade.

Feel free to send any questions you have to franklin@cs, or just show up to the first meeting on Wednesday, September 2nd.

For more information on this and other happenings in the DB group, you can subscribe to the dbchat mailing list by sending a short message to dbchat-request@cs.umd.edu. You can also check out the course's web page at: http://www.cs.umd.edu/areas/db/dbchat.html.
