Spring 2005

Time/Place: Thursdays, 12:30-1:45, AVW 3258

This is a once-a-week discussion/reading group for students, faculty and staff who are interested in examining current and emerging topics of interest in the database area and related research in information systems and networking. Example topical areas include:

  1. Querying heterogeneous databases
  2. Probabilistic databases
  3. Spatio-temporal databases
  4. View maintenance
  5. Ontologies and databases
  6. Multimedia databases
  7. Extracting opinions from text databases
  8. Sensor networks, in particular, application of probabilistic models for data management in them
  9. Data streams
  10. Adaptive query processing
  11. Interoperation of databases distributed on thousands of portable devices
  12. Distributed data aggregation and dissemination
  13. Ubiquitous delivery of updates

All registered participants will be required to present and lead the class discussion (on one or more papers of your choice) at least once during the semester. PDF versions of the presented papers must be sent to yaowu at cs.umd.edu at least one week prior to the presentation, so that they can be posted on the web page. In addition, all attendees are expected to read the papers and participate actively in the discussions. On special request, students who are advanced in their research will also be able to present their own work for critical feedback.

We will plan a tentative set of topics / reading list and order of presentation in the first meeting on Feb 3.

While DBChat is targeted at graduate students seniors in computer science with a reasonably extensive background in DBMS, other graduate students are also encouraged to attend.

Feel free to send any questions you have to yaowu at cs.umd.edu.

For more information on this and other happenings in the DB group, you can subscribe to the dbchat mailing list by sending a short message to dbchat-request at cs.umd.edu. You can also check out the dbchat web page at: http://www.cs.umd.edu/db/dbchat.html.
