Here is a link to the needed system requirements for Visual Studio .NET 2003. In short, it looks like you will need XP or 2000.

Each student is allowed to download the software once. We can authorize
another download if needed. (but, please keep this to a minimum)
The MSDN documentation is a seperate install. It's not a necessary part
of Visual Studio so the students can just skip it for now.
One small problem, when you download Visual Studio it copies an executable
first. This executable then downloads the cd image. The problem is that
Mozilla/Netscape doesn't seem to rename the file correctly. If a student
does use it then they have to rename the file to have a .exe extension.
For some reason IE does it automatically.
