CMSC 102 - Project 4 - Fall 2005 - Documents and File Transfers

Due by 11:55pm on November 10th.

What you will be submitting:
You should keep a piece of paper or a printed copy of the answer form nearby to write down the answers to the questions I ask. You will need to type these answers into an electronic copy of the answer form. A blank answer form is available in the public directory on the GRACE machines. You will need to make yourself a copy of it in your GRACE cluster account's home directory and then fill in the blanks. You can name the file anything you like (it would be easiest for you if its name is descriptive). Type the information into this answer form file in place of the underlined blanks provided. When you are all finished, submit the completed answer form using the following command at the GRACE prompt from your home directory:

             submit     2005     fall     cmsc      102     0301     4     filename

where you replace filename with the actual name of the file the you uploaded earlier in this part.

Use the "more" command before you submit to make sure the p4.answers file is an ASCII file and to make sure the file you are submitting is the one that has your answers filled in.

For this project you will visit different a library catalog via Telnet (heron.wico.lib.md.us with username library if one is requested), other library catalogs via the Web, and a wide variety of web sites. You may need a browser capable of running Java, Flash and/or JavaScript (e.g. Internet Explorer 5+).


Search 1
Using Heron, find the name of the author that would be immediately before "Stephenson, Fred" in this catalog if that name appeared.


Search 2
Using Heron, find two subjects under which the book "Technology and Exceptional Individuals" edited by Lindsey is listed according to this catalog.


Search 3
Using Heron, find a book under the general call number: "371.334 H" and tell us the title.


Search 4
Find each of the following and give the URL for it.
   (a) The homepage for "My Name is Earl" which is on NBC.
   (b) The homepage for "NCIS" on CBS.
Try to do this just by guessing at host names. For example, to get to ABC's home page, I would try http://www.abc.com first.

    Go to http://www.google.com/help/features.html#calculator to find out how to use Google to find out how many stones are in a metric ton. Give the exact URL for the page displaying the answer.

    Find an image of Elvis shaking hands with President Nixon and give the URL for that image.

    Use the University of Maryland Library catalog at www.lib.umd.edu to find the book that in the title says it is about culture clash in classrooms and from the title you can also tell that it deals with computers. The book is written by Goodson. Find out the Call Number and whether the book is currently available. If it is not available at a library on this campus, when is it due back.

    Use the University of Maryland Library catalog at www.lib.umd.edu to find a book titled "Teaching with Technology" which is edited by Les Lloyd. Give the location of a library that currently has the book available. If the book is not available at any of the libraries (this campus or other), give the location and date when the next one to be returned is due and would then become available to you.

    Use the University of Maryland Library pages at www.lib.umd.edu to get into the "Research Port" to do a "Cross Search" in all areas related to education. Find an article that has been published whose title includes "Designing and Supporting Technology Classrooms". Tell what university it was written about, and how you would be able to see a copy of this article.

    Use the International Children's Digital Library at http://icdlbooks.org to find a children's book written in Farsi. Give the title, author, illustrator, and publication date of the book.

    Use the lynx web browser to visit http://www.grace.umd.edu/~egolub/cmsc102.search17.html to get the code phrase for this search.


    Search 18
    Pretend you have been assigned a research paper in a class in your major. You will now do some research for that paper. You will not write the paper itself!!! You should create a well-defined academic research topic for your paper.

    18-1) You need to find four (4) books and two (2) journal articles which relate to your topic in a library and copy down the name of the book or journal, the library branch, the catalog/indexing/etc. number, the author, the date of publication, and the summary if given.

    18-2) Choose two (2) newsgroups which you think might be good to read to gather opinions relating to your topic. You can do a search of articles and keywords at groups.google.com to get ideas of newsgroups that might be good to read. Be sure to give the name of the group and to be sure that it is a USENET newsgroup.

    18-3) Find four (4) non-newspaper/magazine Web pages that have information related to your topic and give the URLs of these pages in your document. The pages must all be from different domains as indicated by their URL.

    18-4) Find two (2) newspaper or magazine articles from different sources online that have information related to your topic and give the URLs of these pages.
