Final report (Due 12/9/04)

This is the final report for your project. In this report, you will present the analysis of the data you gathered during your experiment, as well as a discussion of your results. Your final report should be formatted in conference format and be no more than 10 pages long. The paper "Quantitative analysis of scrolling techniques" by Ken Hinkley et al. can be used as a reference.

What to do

Run you experiment

Your apparatus should now be ready, and you are asked to run between 8 and 12 participants for this experiment (group running survey should talk to me about the appropriate number of participant to run). Please remember that, if for any raison you have to change the apparatus during the experiment you will need to start the experiment over.

Statistical analysis of your results

Using the different methods discussed in class, analyze the statistical significance of your data. Along with your results, you must clearly state the techniques and tests used (such as the post-hoc analysis) as well as the significance level of each results. It might also be useful to include graphical representations of your data to help comprehension.

Deliverables

This is the final report for this project. Your deliverable should have the following parts:

  • An introduction (including the motivations),

  • A previous work section,

  • A description of your experiment, including:

    • Your experimental design,

    • Your experimental apparatus,

    • Your experimental protocol,

    • How you selected your participants,

  • A description of your results with their statistical analysis,

  • A discussion about your results and how they can be interpreted from a practical point of view,

  • A future work section describing what the next steps in your research agenda will be,

  • A conclusion about your work.

A PDF version of your paper will be posted on the class web page.

Poster Presentation

During the last day of class, we will hold a poster presentation. Your group is asked to put together a poster for this presentation. This poster will present the key aspects of your work including:

  • An introduction presenting the motivation of your work,

  • A short description of your experiment,

  • Your results and their statistical analysis,

  • Your conclusions.

We will follow the UIST guidelines for poster presentation, and a poster gallery can be found here. While it is possible to create a poster as a collection of slides, I strongly recommend creating a real poster (using PowerPoint for example).
