CMSC 102 - Fall 2006 - Project #4
Due electronically before 11:59pm on November 8th.
Overview
This project will give you practice searching library catalogs, and a
wide variety of web sites. You may need a browser capable of running
Java, Flash, and/or JavaScript (e.g., Internet Explorer 5+, Firefox).
For this project you will complete a set of search tasks and provide
the results of those tasks in a copy of the following answer form
that you download to your computer:
P4AnswerForm.txt (right-click to be
able to save it to your computer).
Once the form has been completed, you will create a zip file that
includes this form and then you will submit it using the submit
server(http://submit.cs.umd.edu).
The deadline to submit this form is 11:59pm on November 8th.
Specifications
In the following description, Heron refers to the library catalog
you can reach by using telnet (eg: telnet heron.wico.lib.md.us).
Use library as user name if one is requested.
You need to complete each of the following tasks and type your answers into
a copy of the answer form (P4AnswerForm.txt).
You MUST save this as a text file - do NOT save this is a Word document.
The project description is divided into two parts - the first consisting
of searches where we are asking you to find specific things, and the
second consisting of a set of searches you need to perform on a topic
you select according to our guidelines. Answers for both parts are
entered in the same answer form, and are due at the same time.
Part 1
Search 1
using Heron, find the name of the author that would be immediately before
"Golub, Evan" in this catalog if that name appeared.
Search 2
Using Heron, find the subject under which the book "Caught in the Net"
by Kimberly Young is listed according to this catalog.
Search 3
Using Heron, find a book under the general call number "770.92 ADA" and
tell us the title.
Search 4
Find the room number for Kathy Barton who is a Coordinator in the
Computer Science department here at the University of Maryland.
Provide us with her room number and the URL of the page on which
you found it.
When presented with the search results, select "Topo Map" and then find
the school just off Vernon (PS ___ ).
Using this number (PS ___) and your favorite search
engine, find the actual name of this Brooklyn school.
Search 6
Use the whois program at the UNIX command line on
solaris.grace.umd.edu to find out:
The name of the whois server for the registrar in charge of the
site www.mathworld.com.
The name and address of the registrant for the site
www.mathworld.com.
This information appears underneath the "Registrant:" header.
Search 7
Go to www.internic.net to look for
the following information:
The names of two Internet registrars in India.
Who operates the .biz domain.
Search 8
Find an audio clip of a Ferrari race car and give the URL for that sound
file. You must give the URL of the sound file itself not the URL of the
page that linked to the sound file.
Search 9
Go to the site
www.addictinggames.com,
find the link for the game "Chaos Faction", go to that page and find out
who is the sponsor of the game.
Search 10
Go to http://groups.google.com
and find three USENET newsgroups that have had articles about copyright
infringement.
Search 11
Go to http://www.google.com/help/features.html#calculator
to find out how to use Google to find out how many inches are in a furlong.
Perform the search to make sure you did it correctly, and give us the
exact URL for the page displaying the answer.
Search 12
Find an image of President Abraham Lincoln reading to his son
and give the URL for that image.
Search 13
Use the University of Maryland Library catalog at
http://www.lib.umd.edu
to find the book that in the title says is about building a learning
environment and from the title you can also tell that it deals with
online teaching. The book is written by Moore, Winograd, and Lange.
Find out the Call Number and whether
the book is currently available at UMCP (McKeldin Library).
Search 14
Use the University of Maryland Library catalog at
http://www.lib.umd.edu to find a book
titled "Technology Literacy Applications in Learning Environments" which is
edited by David D. Carbonara.
Give the location of a library that currently has the book available.
If the book is not available at any of the libraries (this campus or other),
give the location and date when the next one to be returned is due.

Use the University of Maryland Library pages at
http://www.lib.umd.edu
to get into the "Research Port" to do a "Cross Search" in all areas
related to education. Find an article that has been published whose title
includes "Designing and Supporting Technology Classrooms". Tell what university
it was written about, and how you would be able to see a copy of this article.

Use the International Children's Digital Library at
http://icdlbooks.org
to find a Tongan children's book.
Give the title, author, and publication date of the book.

Use the lynx web browser to visit
http://www.grace.umd.edu/~egolub/cmsc102.search.html
to get the code phrase for this search.
Search 18
Find out what the Chinese word
蓝
means in English.
Search 19
Find a PowerPoint presentation online that contains the word "Mxyzptlk"
but not the word "Beamline" and give the URL for that document.
Search 20
Find a web page that you think is trustworthy that says whether or
not David Rice Atchison was President of the United States of America
for a single day.
Part 2
Pretend you have been assigned a research paper in a class in your major.
You will now do some research for that paper.
You will not write the paper itself.
You should create a well-defined academic research topic for your paper.
You need to find four (4) books and two (2) journal articles which
relate to your topic in a library and copy down the name of the book or
journal, the library branch, the catalog/indexing/etc. number, the author,
the date of publication, and the summary if given.
Choose two (2) USENET newsgroups which you think might be good to read
to gather opinions relating to your topic.
You can do a search of articles and keywords at
http://groups.google.com
to get ideas of newsgroups that might be good to read.
Be sure to give the name of the group and to be sure that it is
a USENET newsgroup.
Find four (4) non-newspaper/magazine Web pages that have information
related to your topic and give the URLs of these pages in your document.
The pages must all be from different domains as indicated by their URL.
Find two (2) newspaper or magazine articles from different sources
online that have information related to your topic and give the URLs of
these pages.
What to Turn In
Once you have completed the answer form (P4AnswerForm.txt) and are
ready to submit, create a zip file with the P4AnswerForm.txt file,
and then go to
http://submit.cs.umd.edu and
submit the zip file under the project submission area named
"Project 4".
The submit server only accepts zip files, therefore you must place your
answer form in a zip file.
