What is MyMedMinder?
MyMedMinder is a secure internet-based automated record that will help you keep track of your medications. It was designed as part of a project for a class in the Computer Science Department at the University of Maryland College Park and is open for free use. Any data that is recorded is password protected, available only to you, and will print-out to paper upon your request.
This project was developed to help people better manage their healthcare by having a record of what medications are being taken, why they are being taken, and who prescribed them for you or your loved one. Having such a record will help you to inform your care givers about what medications you are taking. This can not only help you organize, but it will help your care team make better decisions when planning your healthcare.
Why Should I use MyMedMinder?
Many people in the US take multiple medications for a variety of health conditions. While many people obtain their medications from a family care provider, most patients seek and receive care from many different providers. In addition, many of us take vitamins and over-the-counter (OCT) drugs that are not prescribed by a doctor or another healthcare provider, yet these OTC medications may interact with prescription medications. Without an organized and complete record of what medications are being taken, the chance of medication errors increases.
For example, when one doctor orders a new medication for you and you forget to tell him or her about other medicines you are already taking, dangerous side effects can occur. In addition, you may having to purchase medications that end up having to be discarded because the interact with something you are already taking. Finally, in the event that you must rely on someone else for your care, it is important that a record of what medications you are taking exists, in case you are unable to provide that information yourself. Keeping a good record of the medications that you or your loved one takes is one of the best things that you can do for yourselves. Treat your medication history as if your life depended on it – because it does in many instances!
Is my Personal Information Safe in MyMedMinder?
Yes, your data is safe in MyMedMinder. When you use this program, you will create a set of passwords that only you, or those you share it with, will have. You should not share your password with anyone except someone you trust with your healthcare. The data in the system is assigned a random number upon entry that prevents it from being identified with any single person. Upon successful password entry, the system will retrieve your record using a matching algorithm with the random number. You will also be allowed to save your data to an external source, like your own PC, or a memory stick. In addition, you can print your record to paper. You should take precautions to protect your data once it comes off of MyMedMinder. Shredding of paper copies of your medication record is strongly advised as is password protecting your external source (disk or memory stick or computer).
How Much Does It Cost To Use MyMedMinder?
There is no cost to using MyMedMinder. You may find benefit in purchasing an external source upon which to save your data, such as a memory stick or a computer disk. Many clinical offices now have computer systems, and there is a chance that your provider may be able to access your record right from your memory stick or disk (if you prefer not to use or take paper copies when you visit your doctor or provider).
