Honors 279K - Image Portfolio Description

Over the course of the semester you will take many pictures and create many images. In addition to a general collection of all of your image files, you will need to maintain an annotated, online, portfolio of selected images from your collection for this class. Your portfolio should be organized so that friends and family who might visit your site after the semester is over can not only see images that reflect various course topics, but also read a description of the topic each image or set of images reflect.

For each of your photos used, you should (at a minimum) have the date the photo was taken and the camera settings and a description of any modifications made to it by you. There might be times when you are asked to include a photo or image that is not yours; in these situations, you will need to identify the source of the image. More details will be provided later in the semester, but you should start thinking about which photos you might want to use as you take photos for this class.

There will be some portfolio assignments where I will inform you of something specific that needs to be added to your portfolio, and what the description needs to include.

You will need to maintain this portfolio online. We will be looking at different ways in which we can put pictures and commentary on the web, and then you will be able to choose how you would like to create your final portfolio from the available resources. Please do not access each others sites during the semester - doing so would be a violation of the University's code of academic integrity. I will create a space for the general sharing of photos with the class so that we can all learn from each other's styles.

Ways in which we can make images available online:
    :
  • Via your GLUE/GRACE accounts' web space - you can upload images as shown in class using Secure FTP and then create HTML documents to organize and discuss them. We will explore HTML a little later in the semester.
  • Via a Flickr account - you can upload images, give comments and tags to images, and organize them in thematic sets. I would like everyone to sign up for a free Flickr account. Please use the tag "honr279k" on any images that you post for this class that are for sharing with the class. Don't forget to set your local time zone correctly under your profile so that upload times are accurate. You can see an example Flickr posting at http://www.flickr.com/photos/42849098@N00/246516591/. Please note that Flickr has a limit of 20MB of uploads per user per month. For this reason, you will want to scale your images down to (for example) 800x600 or 600x450 before uploading.
  • More techniques/resources to come...
  • At several points during the semester I will review and grade your portfolio, and send suggestions and feedback as appropriate.
