The "photo assignments" posted (about one a week) are not meant to be the only shoots you do each week. You should always be on the lookout for interesting photographic opportunities to add to your semester individual portfolio. Your submissions for these listed assignments will be counted towards the portfolio grade.
11/27 - Assignment #6: "Color Me"
For this assignment, there are two options.
The first option is for you to take a photograph specifically to create a
grayscale version of it with a highlighted object in color (not the color
it originally had).
The second option is to take an old black and white image that you already
have that you'd like to scan-in and then colorize. If you do not have a
scanner, you can use mine in my office.
Upload both the original image (PA6-orig.jpg) and your colorized
image (PA6-color.jpg) to your /pub/YOURLOGIN/honr279k directory
on the GRACE cluster by NOON on Sunday December 10th.
Reminder: The 7th photo assignment will be
posted early next week and will be due on the last day of classes.
10/20 - Assignment #5: "Heads & Tails"
For this assignment, you need to take and submit a photograph that has
illuminated headlights and/or taillights as the "interesting" aspect.
They can be still or in motion.
There can be one or many.
They don't necessarily have to be on cars.
If you go out in the evening or night or early morning, please choose
a safe place and bring a friend or two. Do NOT put yourself in harm's
way (eg: do NOT try taking a shot in the midst of traffic). Try to
explore your camera's scene settings and/or manual settings for things
such as aperture and shutter speed.
You should take several, and then select one to upload. Name the file
lights.jpg (all lowercase letters) and upload it to the
directory /pub/YOURLOGIN/honr279k on the GRACE cluster by
NOON on Sunday October 29th, 2006.
10/07 - Assignment #4: "On the Level"
For this assignment, you need to stage and take a photograph that has
well-lit regions, but also very poorly-lit regions.
You then need to use the techniques we saw using GIMP to adjust the
levels in the image to bring out more detail and brightness in the
poorly-lit regions, while avoiding blowing out the well-lit regions.
There should be something (or someone) in a poorly-lit region that is
not visible in the original photograph, but is visible after the adjustment.
The original image needs to be named level-orig.jpg and the
adjusted image needs to be named level-adj.jpg. It is critical
for this assignment that the names be these exactly, and all in lower-case
letters. Upload both files to the directory /pub/YOURLOGIN/honr279k
on the GRACE cluster by NOON on Sunday October 15th, 2006.
09/29 - Assignment #3: "The Shadow Knows"
This assignment is inspired by a photograph by George Steinmetz
done for National Geographic Magazine, Turkey. Specifically,
this picture of camels. Those are actually the shadows
of camels. The camels themselves are barely visible as the brighter
spots at the feet of the shadows. This feels far more like a
cave painting than a picture. For this assignment, take a photograph
where the shadow is the item of interest.
Again, you are free to interpret the theme in one of many different ways.
You then need to select one of your photographs, name the file
shadow.jpg (all lowercase letters) and upload it to the
directory /pub/YOURLOGIN/honr279k on the GRACE cluster by
11:59pm on Friday October 6th, 2006. If you would like to
also provide some commentary, create a text file named
shadows.txt and upload that as well.
09/20 - Assignment #2: "Fun with Fruit"
For this photo assignment, the main subject(s) must be fruit, and your
composition should make this obvious.
You can, once again, be creative in your approaches.
At one side of the spectrum might be a traditional still-life.
Somewhere in the middle, you might look for an unusual type of fruit
and photograph it whole or sliced somehow.
At the other end of the spectrum, you might try to use fruit in a
humorous way.
If you have a camera on which you can control the f/stop, I would like
to encourage you to set it to the lowest possible number and see if you
can create a photograph that makes use of Bokeh.
You then need select your one best photograph, name it
fruit.jpg (all lowercase letters) and upload it to the
directory /pub/YOURLOGIN/honr279k on the GRACE cluster by
11:59pm on Thursday September 28th, 2006. If you would like to
also provide some commentary, create a text file named
fruit.txt and upload that as well.
09/08 - Assignment #1: "Signs"
What does "signs" mean as an assignment? You tell me, through your
photography. You can add several photographs from this assignment
to your portfolio, but you will need to put a single image into the
directory /pub/YOURLOGIN/honr279k on the GRACE cluster by
11:59pm on Tuesday September 19th, 2006.
