12/03/07   Final Exam information: The final exam will be on Friday, 12/14 from 4:00-6:00. Please arrive at 3:50 so that we can get things started promptly. Bring pencils with functional erasers! The exam will be in the Armory building. The room number depends on which instructor you have:
  • Fawzi's students (0101, 0102, 0201, 0202 and 131H): ARM 0131
  • Jan's students (0301, 0302, 0401, and 0402): ARM 0135
  • 11/28/07   Project #7 has been posted. Get started right away so that you can get this out of the way long before finals week!

11/14/07   Project #6 has been posted. THIS MAY BE THE HARDEST PROJECT THIS SEMESTER. A lot of students did not do well on project #5 because they ran out of time at the end. We suggest that you CONVINCE YOURSELF that project is due BEFORE the Thanksgiving break. Work hard on the project with that deadline in your mind. That way if you get stuck on something there will still be time to recover.

11/09/07   Please do not forget that you have a midterm exam on Wednesday 11/14 in your LAB session. Be sure to arrive on time and bring pencils with working erasers!

10/31/07   Project #5 has been posted! Too many students waited until the last minute to implement project #4, and as a result many of the grades are not going to be as high as they should be! Please do not make that mistake on this one -- get started immediately, and work hard on the project until it is completed.

10/24/07   Please note that on Project #4 the MyDouble class is IMMUTABLE! That means that aliasing of MyDouble objects is never a problem. Had the MyDouble objects been MUTABLE, then you would need to make copies of them at various places in your code!

10/19/07   Project #4 has been posted!

10/19/07   The submit server is now working normally again. (The time is 6:45PM.) Please be sure to submit your project by the 11:00PM deadline!

10/19/07   Some people are getting an error message when trying to submit that says "Submission Failed. IOExcpeption finding .submitProject and .submitUser files..." etc. I have alerted the submit server staff about this and hopefully it will be resolved quickly.

10/17/07   You may get a warning message in Eclipse that says: "WARNING: REMOTE HOST IDENTIFICATION HAS CHANGED..." Everything is OK, so just click "Yes" and proceed as usual.

10/10/07   If you are having trouble getting Project #3 to work in one of the Labs, try the following: In Java perspective, right-click the project and select "Properties". Select "Java Build Path". Click the tab that says "Libraries". Click the item that says "JUnit" and then click the Remove button.

10/08/07   Jan Plane's office hours for Tuesday 10/9 will be shorter than usual -- she will be available from 9:30 to 10:30 only. This change is for that day only, so she will go back to her usual hours the following week.

10/08/07   Project #3 has been posted!

10/04/07   Please do not forget that your first Midterm Exam is on Monday 10/8 during your lab session (NOT in the lecture). Be on time and bring pencils with erasers! We will have lecture that day as usual and we will be covering important material, so please be sure to attend the lecture as well on Monday.

10/03/07   Fawzi Emad's office hours have been changed. (Added an hour on Wednesday, removed the one on Thursday.) See the Contact link to the left for the listing of everyone's office hours.

09/24/07   Project #2 has been posted.

09/15/07   One of your classmates, Toan Nguyen, discovered an option in Eclipse that will draw a line at the 80th column in the editor so that it will be easy to keep your line-lengths within the acceptible range. Try this: Right-click inside the editor, then choose Preferences, General, Editors, Text Editors. You'll see a checkbox called "show print margin". Check this box, and enter the value 80 in the box below that says Print margin column.

09/12/07   Project #1 has been posted! This project will be a bit more intense than project #0, so get started right away.

09/10/07   Additional study questions have been added. Be sure to check the study questions from time to time. We will continue to add questions (and corresponding answers) to the list as the course progresses (without any further announcements about it.)

09/10/07   If you lost a pair of earphones, or a black spiral notebook, please talk to Fawzi about it -- I have both of these items.

09/07/07   Fawzi Emad's Friday office hour has been permanently moved to Wednesday. Please look at the Contacts link for the complete list of office hours for all of the course staff.

09/07/07   The Java examples from today's lecture have been posted to your CVS repository in a folder called "Fall07Lec04Examples". We will continue to post lecture examples like this throughout the semester. If you'd like to experiment with the examples, just go to the CVS perspective in Eclipse and "check out" this entire folder. Then go back to the Java perspective to work on the files.

09/06/07   If you'd like to work on your projects in one of the computer labs on campus, please take a look at the instructions, located here. The list of computer labs available on campus (and their hours of operation) is here.

09/05/07   The first real project (Project #0) has been posted! To see the instructions, visit the "Projects" link (on the menu to the left.) We strongly recommend that you finish this project as soon as possible so that you will have time to recover from any technical problems that may occur. If you are stuck with any aspect of this assignment, please visit us during office hours! The office hours schedule can be found by clicking the "Contact" link to the left.

08/30/07   TA office hours will begin on Tuesday next week. (Campus is closed on Monday.)

08/30/07   Salsa Dancing Classes: The Computer Science Latino Student Group is sponsoring beginner's salsa dancing classes. The classes will take place on the following dates:

    Sept 4, Sept 6, Sept 11, Sept 13
    Time: 5pm - 6pm
    Location: CSI 2118

No experience necessary and is free. Everyone (UMCP students, faculty, staff, etc.) are welcome to attend.

08/23/07   All students must attend both the lecture and discussion sessions FOR WHICH THEY ARE REGISTERED! You may not attend an alternate section.

08/23/07  Be sure to check this page from time to time (I recommend daily) for important course announcements.  The more recent messages will appear at the top of the page.
