Our intention is to give students some flexibility on how they manage their time in completing these two projects. We encourage you to finish Project #6 as quickly as you can so that you can begin project #7 as soon as possible!

11/05/08   Please note that the due date for Project #5 has been moved from Friday 11/14 to Sunday 11/16.

11/03/08   Project #5 has been posted. Many of you will find this project takes more time than any of the previous ones, so please get started on it right away!

11/03/08   For this week, Jan Plane will have modified office hours (because the project is due on Monday and because a friend has a family emergency on Wednesday). Jan Plane's Monday office hours will be expanded: they are usually 1-3, they will be 1-3:50. She will have an extra office hour on Tuesday for those people who still need to get the project done (for late credit) 1:30 - 2:30. Jan Plane's Wednesday office hours will be shortened: they are usually 1-3, they will be 1-1:50.

10/22/08   Project #4 has been posted!

10/18/08   Another error people are commonly making on the rotate colors is the order of operations - the project description says to "shrink, isolate and then possibly rotate (0 times, 1 time or 2 times)". Realize because of pictures with odd dimensions (and how we are rounding up), the results would not be the same in a different order. For example: if you had a 1 column by 2 row picture and you shrink first you end up with a 1 by 1 by keeping only the top, but if you rotate first (the bottom pixel of the original becomes the leftmost pixel and the top pixel of the original becomes the rightmost pixel) and then when you shrink it gives a 1 by 1 by keeping the bottom of the original.

10/17/08   A common error that is making people fail the "rotate colors" method's release test is actually happening in the "shrink" method. People are rounding down rather than rounding up when the size is odd.

10/09/08   Project #3 has been posted!

09/22/08   An example called "MyGridDemo" has been posted to your CVS repository. This example is intended to give you an idea about how to approach project #2, so please look it over!

09/22/08   Project #2 has been posted!

09/22/08   There is a way to have Eclipse automatically draw a vertial line in the editor at exactly the 80th column. (That way you can easily check that your lines are all less than 80 characters long, which is our requirement this semester.) Try this: Right-click inside the editor, then choose Preferences, General, Editors, Text Editors. You'll see a checkbox called "show print margin". Check this box, and enter the value 80 in the box below that says Print margin column.

09/17/08   Project #1 has been distributed to your CVS repository. This project is far more challenging than the previous one, so please begin working on it immediately!

08/27/08   Project #0 has been distributed to your CVS repository. Be sure to "check out" the project files before you begin. The project description (instructions) can be viewed by clicking on the "Projects" link to the left.

08/27/08   All students must attend both the lecture and discussion sessions FOR WHICH THEY ARE REGISTERED! You may not attend an alternate section.

08/27/08  Be sure to check this page from time to time (I recommend daily) for important course announcements.  The more recent messages will appear at the top of the page.
