Important announcements related to the course will be posted here. Please check this page daily.
- Dec 17 - Final grades have been submitted to UMEG,
and are now visible on grades server.
- Dec 13 - Final exam scores now visible on grades server.
Final grades will be assigned by Thu.
- Dec 12 - If you have questions about how your
project 5 was graded, please contact the TA who graded
your project. There
should be a comment on the grades server indicating who graded
the project.
- Dec 11 - Project 5 scores now visible on grades server.
- Dec 9 - Minor updates to lectures 16-typesBindings and 22-lambda.
- Dec 9 - Midterm 2 & solution posted online

- Dec 7 - Please submit your course evaluations online
here by Sunday, Dec 12th.
Suggestions for future improvements are welcome.
- Dec 7 - Added two practice final exams
here. Added note that
polymorphism will not be covered on the final exam.
- Nov 30 - Project 4 scores on grades server updated to
include new 5pt test for parser detection of input with illegal syntax.
Total score now out of 105 points.
Release/secret RE-to-Str tests also changed to no longer rely on
working parser.
- Nov 30 - Final exam has been scheduled for Mon, Dec 13th, 4-6pm
in CSIC 1115.
- Nov 30 - Project 5 late deadline pushed back one day to Thu, Dec 2nd.
On-time submission deadline remains unchanged.
- Nov 27 - Project 6
has been posted and is ready for submissions
to the submit server. It will be due Dec 9th, 2010.
- Nov 17 - Midterm 2 scores have been posted on the grades server.
Midterms will be returned Friday in discussion.
- Nov 16 - On Wed Nov 17, Chen's office hours (from 11am to noon)
and Destan's hours (from 1-3pm) are cancelled for midterm 2 grading.
If you wish to ask TA questions during these hours come to AVW 4185 instead.
On Thu Nov 18, Vaddadi's office hours from noon-12:30pm are tentatively
cancelled.

will be due Tue, Nov 30th.
- Nov 9 - Midterm 2 takes place Tue, Nov 16th. It will
cover OCaml, CFGs, and parsing.
- Nov 2 - Midterm 1 & Quiz 3 solutions have been posted online

- Oct 29 - Quiz 3 scores have been posted on the grades server.
- Oct 28 - Chen's TA hours from 9-noon on Wed, Nov 3
have been canceled.
- Oct 28 - Quiz 3 will cover material in practice
problems 3.1, 3.2, 3.3a-c, 4.1-4.6. I had switched problem
set 3 & 4 earlier on the class web page.
- Oct 26 - Quiz 3 takes place this Fri. It will
cover OCaml and CFGs, but not parsing. For details on
which topics are covered check here.
- Oct 26 - Project 3 scores posted on grades server.
- Oct 26 - Project 4 due date
moved to Fri, Nov 5. Submit server now accepting submissions.
Note release tokens may be used before passing all public tests.
- Oct 21 - Project 4 posted online. It
will be due Wed Nov 3. Submit server will be up by Fri.
- Oct 19 - Project 3 late deadline
extended to Friday, Oct 22. On-time deadline is still Wed, Oct 20.
- Oct 18 - Updated Project 3 submit server tests to
include public/release tests for assoc lists.
- Oct 13 - Project 2 and Midterm 1 scores have been
posted on the grades server. Midterm 1 will be returned
in discussion Friday.

- Sep 28 - Tim Destan will hold extra office
hours Tue Oct 5 from 4:30-6pm in the normal TA office
in place of Prof Tseng.
- Sep 28 - Prof Tseng's office hours canceled
Oct 5,7,12 to attend Honor Hearings for last semester's
academic dishonesty cases.
- Sep 26 - Quiz 2
(scheduled for Fri, 10/1) will cover
Ruby, regular expressions, and finite automata.
- Sep 26 - Submit server now accepting
Project 2 submissions. Project 1 scores

- Sep 23 - Project 2 posted, due Wed Oct 6.
- Sep 22 - Projects are graded using a "release-test aware" policy.
The score calculated by the submit server is the highest of the following:
- last on-time submission
- last on-time release-tested submission
- last late submission before late deadline (-10%)
- last late release-tested submission before late deadline (-10%)
- Sep 19 - Quiz 1 scores posted on grades server.
Quizzes will be returned in discussion section.
- Sep 14 - Project 1 submit server test setup

Information
| Course Description
| A study of programming languages, including their
syntax, semantics, and implementation. Several
different models of languages are discussed,
including procedural (Ruby), functional (OCaml),
and object-oriented (Java). Language features
such as formal syntax, scoping and binding of
variables, higher-order programming, typing and
type polymorphism, and object inheritance are explored.
