Overview: This course is a broad survey of concepts and methods in artificial intelligence. There will be quizzes and homeworks approximately weekly, two midterm exams and one final, and four programming projects. The course is intended in part as providing general background useful to those who may later take advanced courses in specialized topics (eg, at the graduate level). As such we will also consider historical, philosophical, and biological themes that appear in or have influenced AI.


Logistics: Quizzes will tend to be given on Tuesdays at 8am; and homeworks will also normally be due at that time. Homework turned in after 8:15 will be discounted 50%; and after 9:15 no credit will normally be given.

My policy is that ``authorized'' assistance includes talking together about assignments and approaches to them, but *not* writing up with assistance or collaboration on---or with access to another's---actual final materials to hand in.

Excused Absences: Students claiming an excused absence must apply in writing and furnish documentary support (such as from a health care professional who treated the student, or from an appropriate University supervisor regarding participation in an official University activity) for any assertion that the absence qualifies as an excused absence. The support should explicitly indicate the dates or times of absence. Self-documentation of illness is not itself sufficient support to excuse the absence. An instructor is not under obligation to offer a substitute assignment or to give a student a make-up assessment unless the failure to perform was due to an excused absence. The instructor makes the decision as to whether a claimed excused absence is in fact excused.
