Some thoughts in terms of questions for the in-class portion of the final exam
(Sat, Dec 21 at 1:30PM in CSI 1121).

The structure of the exam will be similar to that of the midterm, but there will be four questions presented, of which you will have to answer three. These are meant to provide examples of what material the questions will cover based on class discussions, readings, posted slides you were askd to read, etc. Some of question below might combined to form a single multi-part question on the actual exam. Other questions might be added. Don't forget about the take-home part.

Define "internal consistency" and "external consistency" as it applies to visual design and explain the difference between the two.

What is the "Seller vs. Buyer" or the "Designer vs. User" issue in system design?

Define "information scent" and give some real-world examples of examples of good and of bad applications of the concept.

Discuss three key issues related to information visualization.

Define the "action-object" model and the "object-action" model and state which you think is the more natural in the context of interfaces and why.

Briefly weigh the strengths and weaknesses of Qualitative user studies vs. Quantitative user studies.

There are several ways to visually identify groups of items in a graphical user interface. State and explain two different ways we have discussed. For each, draw an interface that demonstrates how the principle can be used to represent the following: - Group 1: Name, Age, Gender - Group 2: Favorite Movie, Release Year - Group 3: Favorite Color

In class and slides, the story of Clever Hans came up in discussing the topic of experimental bias. Explain the problem that is demonstrated by the Clever Hans scenario, and explain how you can avoid such situations in a study.

While performing a user study, under what circumstances is it acceptable to deny a participant's request to stop the study.

Identify three things that you should do before beginning an experiment with a subject.

What is the purpose of an IRB review?

List four ways we can demonstrate respect for participants in a research study.

Define the three different direct observation techniques we discussed. State which of the three you think is most useful and why.

Discuss the three elements of this course that you think will be most useful in working on your DCC capstone project. Explain how they will be useful within the context of your capstone project.
