PRESENTATION OF DESIGN

Look at Pictures
As mentioned earlier, the system has been designed with high emphasis on visual stimuli, thus "Look at Pictures" is by far one of the most important components of the system as it lets the user search for a particular person. The contact people are sorted alphabetically along with their relationship to the user, such as Lily (Daughter), Betty (Sister), etc. The application allows for three ways to search for an individual.

a) The first and most basic way is to click the right and left arrow buttons to move back and forth between contacts until the desired contact is displayed. The current/selected contact's name is at the bottom of the picture. (Refer to fig.1)

Figure 1: Shows a basic way to search for contacts.

b) The second and slightly faster way is to click the "Thumbnail Layout" button, and select one of four contacts displayed. The right and left arrow buttons work as expected, this time showing sets of four contacts at a time. Clicking on a contact's thumbnail picture would show the "Fullsize Layout" of the individual. (Refer to fig.2)

c) Another way to look at contacts is to select a person's name from the list on the left hand side. Although this ignores the graphical concept, it's a much faster way to access contacts if the target contact name is known. (Refer to fig.2)

Figure 2: Shows a more advanced way to search for contacts.

The system is very flexible and therefore the three approaches can be used interchangeably as the user sees fit. For example, the user can start of by clicking the "Layout view" then can click "Fullsize view" half way through, finally use the side list to move back and forth.

Send an Email Card
This feature allows a user to send a greeting card to contact on their list with relative ease. It uses the same browse feature to search for people in addition to allowing the user to select a variety of occasions to send the card. On request, more occasions can be easily added into the application. The process of sending a greeting involves three steps. The three steps can need to be done sequentially by choosing the tabs one after the other. Following are the steps to send a greeting card email.

Step 1: The users are presented with an "Occasion" tab, they first need to select an occasion to send a card (refer to
fig.3)

Figure 3: First step is to select an occasion to send the e-card.

Step 2: Once the occasion has been selected, the user needs to click the "Send To" tab and select a person to send the card. As mentioned earlier, users will have access to the same browse menu as before and thus would be very familiar using it. (Refer to fig. 4)

Figure 4: Second step is to select a person to send the e-card.

Step 3: After selecting the occasion and the desired user, the "Message" tab shows a prewritten message. The user can either modify it to suit their needs or write a new message from scratch by clicking the "Clear Message" button and rewriting a new message. (Refer to
fig.5)

Figure 5: Third step is to write the message to send in the e-card.

Finally the users can click on "Send Message" or discard it by clicking on one of the buttons on the left hand side panel.

To keep the layout of the forms consistent with the target audience this application uses a big font and huge buttons along with lots of graphics to present a high graphic layout.

Make a phone call
As the main idea behind our project is to use pictures as a visual aid for the elderly, we have incorporated a photo album. The album contains pictures of various people including family and health personnel, and all those people whom the user might wish to communicate with. The approach used was to layout a design that would allow the user to quickly and efficiently place a call to an individual at any of three different locations.

At the start of the program, the user is presented with a welcome screen, which was shown above. From here, the user selects "Make a phone call" from the menu options on the left-hand side of the program. The screen presents simple instructions for the user to follow to accomplish the task of calling someone. The user is prompted to choose a person to call by clicking on the "Choose Person" button. Upon clicking this button, the screen changes to this next one:

Figure 6: Selecting a person to call.

This represents the first entry in the album. Each name is followed by the relationship with the user, example, sister, son, or doctor. The "Next" button allows the user to scroll through the list of available people in the album. The album loops in a circular motion, that is, when the last person is reached, it starts at the beginning of the album and shows everyone again

Upon choosing a person to place a call to, the user has to click on a radio button to select one of three locations to call. In the following screenshot, we have selected to call Edwards at work. The user clicks on the "Call" button to complete the call and gets a pop up window stating that the call has been completed. The user is prompted is click "OK" to end the call and this terminates a call session. Upon completion of the call, the screen returns to its initial partially blank state presented before the user starts placing a call.

Figure 7: Screen when a call is completed.

In the event that the user forgot to select a person to call, and instead, just selected a location to call and pressed the call button, a message window pops up informing the user of the omission. Likewise, when a person is selected and a location is not selected, an error message is displayed when the user clicks on the call button. In the event that the user does not wish to complete a call, the "Cancel" button can be used to cancel a call before it is placed.

Communication Diary
As with other parts of the program, this part is laid out in manner that allows for a quick, efficient, and straightforward approach to gathering information on people and the frequency of contacts with them.

At the start of the program, the user is presented with a welcome screen, from here; the user selects "Communication Diary" from the menu options on the left-hand side of the program. The user is then presented with the next screen. The screen presents simple instructions for the user to follow to find the times when they have communicated with a certain individual. The user is prompted to choose a person to search for by clicking on the "Choose Person" button. Upon clicking this button, the screen changes to this next one:

Figure 8: Selecting a person to find.

This part of the program closely resembles the "Make a call" part. As before, the user can click on the "Next" button to view the next entry in the photo album. At the end of the last picture, the program starts with the first picture again. To search for outgoing emails to Franchesca, the user selects Franchesca, email as the type of correspondence, and outgoing as the category. The user clicks on the "Search" button to search and the result is presented as follows:

Figure 9. Screen after a search is completed.

Error checking is provided at each level of selection. If the user tries to proceed with a search without selecting any of these three categories: Person, Type, or Category; the program displays an error message indicating which criteria for search the user has omitted. In the event that the user wants to cancel the search for someone, the "Cancel" button can be used to achieve this purpose.
