- There will be five homework assignments during the term. The first four homeworks are individual assignments. You may not discuss them with other students or receive outside help from anyone other than the instructor or teaching assistant. For the first homework you will need to talk to example users - details will be given in the homework description. The fifth homework might have a small team (ie: two or three students) option in which case you would be allowed to discuss them with the other students in your team (though still not receive outside help from anyone other than the instructor or teaching assistant).

- There will be four projects during the term. Projects will be done in groups of 3 or 4 students. These teams will be determined during the second or third week of class.

- There will be two exams during the term.
- The scheduled date for these will be March 9th and May 4th.
- The second exam might have some material that was covered earlier in the term. Details will be given in class.

Various things will contribute to this portion of the grade. Examples include:
- Participation in various exercises done during class time.
- The Hall of Fame presentations (details to be given in class).
- Individual exploration assignments (details to be given in class)

All assignments are due at the beginning of the class on the day that they are due. If there is a paper part, it must be turned in at the beginning of class. If there is an electronic part, it must be submitted by class time. Late assignments must be handed in to me and will be strictly penalized as follows:
-20% if submitted up to 24 hours late
-50% if submitted up to 48 hours late
-100% if submitted more than 48 hours late

- Required: Designing the User Interface: Strategies for Effective Human-Computer Interaction, 4th Edition Shneiderman [Addison-Wesley], 2004. Note: This edition was just released. Up until now I have been using the 3rd Edition. I will attempt to post equivalent readings for both editions, but the 4th Edition has moved some material and added some material, so this may not be possible.
- Recommended and other required: See the reading list page.

Homework will not be accepted late without penalty without a valid medical excuse. Since you are given an extended period of time in which to work on a given assignment, the medical excuse will need to cover an extended period of time as well. A letter from your physician with his/her phone number and the specific dates for which you were incapacitated will be required at a minimum. Even with a valid excuse, you will still be expected to hand in the assignment promptly; you will be given what I feel is an appropriate amount of time. If you miss an exam, you will also need a valid medical excuse as described above and will need to bring me this documentation at the next class session. I will either count the other class exam in its place or provide a make-up exam at my discretion.

The four projects are groups assignments, and each member of the group is expected to accurately represent their contribution. Any attempts to circumvent deadlines or rules will be considered incidents of academic dishonesty. For the homeworks that are individual assignments, students may not discuss them with anyone other than the instructor or the teaching assistant for this course unless otherwise specified within the homework description. For the homework with the team option, the team project rules (see above) apply. In cases where a homework involves interviewing potential users, details will be given in class as to how these users may be selected, and what can and can not be discussed with these users. Exams are individual works and a student may not look at another student's exam, or refer to any notes (unless exceptions are stated in advance), during the exam period. Any student violating any of these or general University academic honesty rules will be reported to judicial programs for a hearing and should expect to fail the course as a result.

Our classroom has Internet connectivity. Internet usage may be monitored for educational and/or research purposes as it relates to our class.
