Overview
In this project you will use software on machines running the Windows and the Mac OS X operating systems, install software on your home computer if necessary, and visit several web sites. You will also sign up for a GLUE computer account if you do not have one yet.
Specifications
Read the ENTIRE project description before starting on any of the tasks. There are seven tasks in all.
Keep in mind that in the WAM labs double-clicking on a .jpg file may not work. If you experience this problem, launch Paint or Paint.NET and open the .jpg file.
You will need to take screenshots at various points to submit to us to show that you have accomplished the various tasks in this project. If you are going to be using your own Windows or Mac OS X machine for projects during the semester, you might need to install some software to complete this project. Links will be provided to the appropriate software.
Several WAM labs have Mac OS X machines, and most WAM labs have Windows machines. You can find a list of WAM labs online at:

We will require you to create various documents, some as PDF files (PDF is an acronymn that stands for Portable Document Format) and others as image files (such as GIF or JPG).
Capturing Copy of Screen (PC)
To capture a copy of the current screen on a PC running Windows, press the PrintScreen button (often labelled as PrtSc) on your keyboard to place a screenshot image in the system's pasting buffer, often refered to as the clipboard. Now lauch the graphics program Microsoft Paint (can be found on the START menu under Programs or All Programs, under Accessories) and go to the EDIT menu and select PASTE. Once the image has been pasted, go to the FILE menu and select SAVE AS. There will be a drop-down list of image formats towards the bottom of the dialog box (with the label "Save as type:" next to it). Select either "Graphic Interchange Format (*.gif)" or "JPEG File Interchange Format (*.jpg, *.jpeg)" from this list. Finally, enter a name for the file and click SAVE.
Creating (Printing to) a pdf file(PC)
If you are not working in a WAM lab, you will need to install CutePDF available at:
http://www.cutepdf.com/Products/CutePDF/writer.asp
in order to save a file as a pdf file. Installing CutePDF requires installing GPL Ghostscript 8.15 and CuteWriter. You will see links (labeled "Free Download") to those files on the above link. Click on each of the two links and either select "Open" when the "File Download" dialog appear to run the installer, or select "Save" to save it to your desktop, and then run the installer from the desktop.
The following steps describe how to save a file as a pdf file once you have installed CutePDF:
- Open the file and select the "Print..." option.
- Choose "CutePDF Writer" as your printer and then choose "Print".
- A dialog box will appear asking for a file name. Specify a name and choose "Save".
Capturing Copy of Screen (Mac)
To capture a copy of the current screen on a Mac running OS X, press the keyboard combination of Command-Shift-3. This means press and hold the Command key (the one with the image of an Apple and/or what looks like a flower with four leaves - click here to see it), while holding that down press and hold the Shift key, and while holding both of those down press the 3 key. You can then release all three keys. If a PDF file is created on the desktop (such as Picture1.pdf) then you are done. If a PNG of the screen is created on your desktop (with a name such as Picture1.png) then you need to convert this to a PDF file (see next section).
Creating (Printing to) a PDF file(Mac)
To create a pdf file from an existing file, double-click the file (this should open it in Preview) and then "print" the image to a PDF file. To do this, go to FILE then Save As... In this dialog box, select the format to be "PDF" and then enter the name of the file to which you want to save the document (such as Task2.pdf) and select the location to which to save the document (such as the desktop).
Creating Archive Files in Windows
To create an archive file on a Windows machine, we will use the
program WinZip (http://www.winzip.com).
You can use the free evaluation version if you do not have it installed on your
machine already - the evaluation version is fully functional and does not expire.
Place all the files you need to submit for the Windows part of the project into a single folder called "P1-Win". Once all of the files are in that folder, you are ready to create a single zip file archive of the entire folder. This will create one file that contains all of the files that were in the folder. Please note that if you change the contents of the folder, the zip archive is NOT changed automatically, and you should delete the zip file and create it again. There are several ways to create a zip file with the contents of a folder. Some machines are set up so that if you right-click on the folder, the context menu will have an option "Add to FolderName.zip" (where the fodler's actual name will be used rather than "FolderName"). If you select this with the P1-Win folder, a single zip archive files named P1-Win.zip will be created and it will contain all of the individual files that were in the folder. If the context menu does not have this option, then you will run WinZip directly to create the archive file.
To create the archive file using WinZip directly, first launch WinZip. If it begins in Wizard mode (a dialog box will appear with a title such as "Welcome to the WinZip Wizard") switch to Classic Mode by clicking on the button labelled "WinZip Classic". If it shows you a tip, go ahead and close the tips window. Now, click and drag the P1-Win folder over the WinZip application. A new dialog box will appear with the title "Add". There will be a text box labelled "Add to archive" with a directory path (ie: a folder's location) already filled in and highlighted. This textbox needs to contain the desired location on your computer's drive for the new zip file, as well as the name of that file. When you drag a folder to WinZip, it fills that text box with the location of that folder. To create a zip file that incorporates the name of the folder, and have it in the same location as that folder, you'll need to left-click in this box to the right of that text to deselect the text, and then delete the right-most "\" character and then click on the "Add" button. A new file will appear called "P1-Win.zip" which is an archive file containing all of the files in the folder.
You can create a new folder on the desktop in Windows by right-clicking on an unused portion of the desktop. A context menu will appear - one of the options will be "New". You should move your mouse to that option and hold it there until a submenu appears. On that submenu will be an option near the top labelled "Folder". Click on this option. A new folder will be placed on the desktop, and you can type a new name for it. If you ever need to rename a folder, you right-click on the folder and select "Rename" from the context menu. The folder's name will then become editable.
Once a zip file has been created, you can view a list of the contents of the archive by double-clicking on the file. This will launch WinZip and allow you to see the contents of your archive. You can also view a file in the archive by double-clicking on it in that list. Please note that if you do open a file this way, no changes you make to it would be saved to either the archive file or to the original file in your P1-Win folder.
Creating Archive Files in the Mac
To create an archive file on a Mac OS X machine, we will use the ability to create a ZIP archive of an entire folder that is built into the operating system. Place all the files you need to submit for the Mac OS X part of the project into a single folder called "P1-Mac".
Once all of the files are in that folder, you can Control-Click on that folder (this means to press and hold the key labelled "control" and then click on the folder) to get a context menu of options. One of those options will be "Create Archive of P1-Mac". Select this option. A new file will appear called "P1-Mac.zip" which is an archive file containing all of the files in the folder.
You can create a new folder on the desktop in OS X by Control-Clicking on an unused portion of the desktop. A context menu will appear - one of the options will be "New Folder". You should click on this option. A new folder will be placed on the desktop, and you can type a new name for it. If you ever need to rename a folder, you Control-Click on the folder, then select the "Get Info" option, then change the name of the folder in the text box under "Name & Extension" and then close that window by clicking on the red button in the upper left-hand corner of that window.
Once a zip file has been created, you can view a list of the contents of the archive by double-clicking on the file. This will extract the contents of the zip archive to a new folder. If a folder already exists with that name (as would be the case if you did this right after creating the zip file) it will create a folder with the same prefix, but with an extended name (typically with a #2 at the end). Please note that if you do open a file this way, no changes you make to it would be saved to either the archive file or to the original file in your P1-Mac folder.
Submitting your Files
When submitting this project, you will submit two "archive" files. One for the Windows files and one for the Mac OS X files. Once you have your zip archive files created and ready to submit, go to http://submit.cs.umd.edu and submit the two zip archive files under the appropriate project submission areas there. You will need to log into that site with your University of Maryland DirectoryID and password. You will see in the list of projects, two projects; Project 1 - Windows Files and Project 1 - OS X Files. When you click on submit for one of these, you will be taken to a web page where you can Browse... for the file on your hard drive that you need to submit and then click the Submit project button to have it uploaded. It will take a few minutes to complete the upload (the exact time will vary based on your Internet connection) so be sure to wait and see that it has completed before going off to do something else. Make sure you do submit the P1-Win.zip file and P1-Mac.zip file under the different project submission pages as indicated. There is no automated grading for projects in this class, so please disregard the comments at the top of the screen related to automated testing of submissions. We will only grade the last zip archive uploaded to each of the two project areas (one with the Windows files, the other with the OS X files).

Task #3
From a Windows machine go to page:

using your choice of browsers. This page will display your computer's Internet Protocol address, information about your browser, and the time you accessed the page. Take the screenshot, paste it into Paint, and then save the file as a pdf file named Task3.pdf in your P1-Win folder.
Task #4
Go to the OIT page about McAfee/Virex (as appropriate for the machine you use at home or on campus) and take a screenshot showing us you viewing that page. You do not have to install it if you are using WAM machines or if you do not want to install on your home machine.

Task #5

Download this file to your machine and double-click it to open the file with WinZip or extract the contents if you are using a Mac. NOTE: If you are using a Mac, the zip file might be automatically extracted when it is finished downloading, in which case you are ready to move right to the sub-tasks.
- SubTask 5-1
Take a screenshot of the archive open on your machine if you are using WinZip on a Windows PC, or a screenshot of the contents of the folder that gets created on a Mac. Save this screenshot to a file named either Task5-1.jpg (if you are using a Windows machine) or Task5-1.pdf (if you are using a Mac OS X machine) in your P1-Win or P1-Mac folder as appropriate. - SubTask 5-2
Extract the file named SamplePDF.pdf to your desktop and rename that file "Task5-2.pdf" and then move it to your P1-Win or P1-Mac folder as appropriate.
Task #6
You will need to have a GLUE account for this course. This should be the same login name as your WAM account, but will be on a different set of machines. To activate your GLUE account (or find out if you already have one) go to the page at:
and set up your GLUE account if it has not yet been activated.
Save a copy of the web page showing either that your GLUE account has been activated or has been applied for. To save the copy, print the page to a pdf file. Name the file Task6.pdf and then move it to your P1-Win or P1-Mac folder as appropriate.
Task #7
For this task you will launch a Secure Shell Client. We will not actually use this software until project 2, but we want to make sure you have access to it now.
On a machine running windows, we will use the "F-Secure SSH" client. If
you are working on your own Windows machine and do not have F-Secure SSH
installed, you can download a copy for free from:

When installing F-SSH, please be sure to leave the option "Add F-Secure
SSH Client installation directory into path" checked. Also, make sure
that you enter the registration key so that it does not expire during
the semester. Notice that the registration key can be found in in
the folder c:\temp\fsecure
On a machine running Mac OS X, we will use the built-in secure shell client "ssh" from the Terminal window, so there is nothing to install.
From either a Windows or Mac OS X machine (whichever you plan to regularly use for your projects in this class) have the secure shell client's info displayed on-screen. Take a screenshot of this and save it to a file named either Task7.jpg (if you are using a Windows machine) or Task7.pdf (if you are using a Mac OS X machine) in your P1-Win or P1-Mac folder as appropriate.
To show the client's info on a Windows machine, launch the F-Secure Shell client, go to the HELP menu and click About.
To show the client's info on a Mac OS X machine, open a Terminal window and type ssh -V at the prompt. Please note that the letter V *must* be capitalized. If you do not have a shortcut to Terminal in your AppleDock you can find it under Applications in the folder Utilities. It is named Terminal.app in that folder.
