Announcements
May 21
End-of-course announcements:
  • Final course grades should be available shortly via Testudo.

  • Due to problems with the submit server's handling of concurrent programs, we ended up having to run the Project #6s on a different machine, so the result you see on the submit server is not accurate. We will post the secret tests and information about the way the project was graded shortly.

  • A copy of all of your grades is being emailed to your mail.umd.edu email address, so you can find out your final exam score, and verify that all of the grades we have recorded for you are correct. If you don't receive this mail at your mail.umd.edu address, or you see any discrepancy in your grades, let me know right away (please call rather than sending email.)

  • The final exam results were:
    Average: 149.8 out of 200 (74.9%)
    Standard deviation: 28.6
    Distribution:
    180-200 (90-100%): 4
    160-179 (80-89%): 8
    140-159 (70-79%): 11
    120-149 (60-69%): 8
    < 120 (< 60%): 3

  • The weights chosen for the projects are:

    Project #1 Project #2 Project #3 Project #4 Project #5 Project #6
    7% 7% 9% 5% 9% 3%

  • Using the above information, and your final exam score being emailed, you can calculate your final course score. The average overall score for all students for all coursework was 67.8.

  • Anyone interested may see their final exam in my office, after final grades have been submitted, but according to the University policy I have to keep them. Call me after final grades have been submitted if you want to see your final (please call rather than sending email).

  • If you would like to contact me about anything after this time please call me in my office, rather than sending email. If I'm not in my office, please leave a message.

Note that I am not teaching this summer and I will rarely be in my office during the next couple of weeks. Just leave a message and I will call back before the next time I plan to be on campus.

  • This class webpage, as well as the web forum, may be taken down over the summer, so if there's any information you want to save from these which you haven't already copied, you should probably get it soon. As discussed in the Project #6 assignment, all files in your extra course disk space, and those in the directory 330public, will become inaccessible later, so if you want to save any of this information as well you should do so before too long.

April 24
A short suggestion to everyone, prompted by finding a textbook lost by someone in the other course I'm teaching- take a moment every semester to write your name and phone number in your textbooks and notebooks. I often find lost textbooks (which are expensive to replace, and have resale value) and notebooks (which have irreplacable notes and work), and almost never is there a name written in them, so there's often no way to return them to the owner despite trying to do so.
March 12
As announced in discussion today, John's office hours this afternoon are being moved to sometime later this week (times to be announced).
March 3
A short handout concerning project grading information, and containing project submission instructions, has been posted on the "Administrative" page.
March 2
Several corrections and clarifications have been made to the project in the class web forum. The public test has also been posted in the class web forum. Not all students have signed up for the web forum; those who haven't are missing the important information there. The project assignment contains the steps for signing up for the forum, so please carefully read these and proceed as they describe.
February 23
As announced in lecture yesterday, John's Friday office hours will not be held this week; rather he will have additional office hours next Wednesday 11-12 and 5-6.
February 12
Please change your office hours handout so John's office hours on Monday are correct; they should be Monday 1-4 (not 1-3 as the front page of the office hours handout said).
February 9
As discussed in lecture, the first homework has been posted, on the Homework page.
January 27
Information about Ruby has been added to the Information page.
January 25
