Fear the Turtle!

Announcements

5/10/09   The answers to the review sheet handed out in class last week are available here.

5/10/09   Regular Office Hours will end as of Tuesday, May 12. Jan Plane will have office hours Thursday (12:30-2:30) and Friday (11:00-1:00) to help people prepare for the final exam.

5/6/09   Message from Nelson Padua-Perez;
Hi:
I will be teaching a summer course called CMSC122. The course covers JavaScript,HTML/CSS and Web design. If you can let your friends or anyone interested in the course about it I would appreciate it a lot. We need people for the course otherwise the course will not be offered.
By the way, people in other schools (e.g., community colleges) can take this course.
Thanks, Nelson

5/4/09   Final exam will be Friday, May 15th 4:00-6:00pm as announced on the syllabus. The location is CHM 1407 which is here.

4/25/09   Announements about labs for the week of April 27th: Monday you will go over the exam and have the regular weekly quiz (over the previous week's material) and on Wednesday you will have an extra credit quiz over the same material as was on exam 2 (as announced in class Friday).

4/22/09   For project 6 - we are seeing one common error that can easily be avoided. It is caused by a misunderstanding of the compareTo method. What you can know about compareTo is that it returns a negative, a positive or zero. You do not know that it will return a -1, 1 or 0.

4/17/09   When studying for the test, you may want to see the quiz and its answers from last week. So here they are: quiz and answers.

4/18/09   All of the answers to the review sheet are completed and available here.

3/11/09   If you are interested in a working for Microsoft? Click here for more information.

3/03/09   Since the lab didn't meet yesterday, you were not able to get quiz #4 back there in order to have it to study from for the exam. I am getting the quizzes from the TAs and should have them in my office hours (9:30-11:30 today). If you would like to have your quiz back today, you can pick it up from me there. Or you can click here to see the quiz and its answers.

3/02/09   Remember, also use the lecture examples (posted in CVS), the lab exercises (posted in CVS), the projects you have completed, the lecture outlines (posted on the web page), the notes you've taken in class, the quizzes you have already taken, and the study questions (broken into 4 sets to match up with lecture slide topics) remember to "study daily".

3/02/09   Here are some further study aids (as mentioned in the most recent posting to these announcements). This is the quiz you would have had today in lab and its answers. Also, if you didn't pick one up in class on Friday, here is the "pseudoQuiz" review sheet that was going to be discussed in lab today along with the answers in text form.

3/02/09   I have just learned that the university will be closed today, Monday March 2. Please, be aware that the exam scheduled for Wednesday will go on as scheduled. I will be posting more announcement here including additional study aids as the day goes on.

2/25/09   Since the file distributed for the lab exercise yesterday had a hidden file that was damaged, that lab exercise does not have to be submitted and will not be graded. That set of exercises was created because they are good practice for the exam.

2/24/09   Due to a minor car accident on the way in this morning, Jan Plane's office hours for today (Tuesday) need to be cancelled. She will have additional hours on Thursday 2/26 from 9am - 11am to replace those hours.

2/23/09   What the grid is supposed to look like when an invalid letter is typed by the user was not pictured in the original description, so to see exampes of the error grid click here.

2/14/09   There was a problem on the submit server. It has been fixed, but there are some people in the class who will notice short term problem. The only people who will see any difference are those who had previously successfully submitted project 1 but when they try to submit again they get the error that says they are not registerd for the course. If you have previosly submitted project 1 but now can not submit becuase it says you are not registered for the course, click here for directions on how to fix it. This process will only need to be done once, and will only need to be done for project 1.

2/11/09   As mentioned today in class, there is a way to have Eclipse automatically draw a vertial line in the editor at exactly the 80th column. (That way you can easily check that your lines are all less than 80 characters long, which is our requirement this semester.) Try this: Right-click inside the editor, then choose Preferences, General, Editors, Text Editors. You'll see a checkbox called "show print margin". Check this box, and enter the value 80 in the box below that says Print margin column.

2/09/09   In project 3, there are two lines that are not supposed to be changed. Since some of you have changed them, I am including them here:
The line immediately after you introduce yourself by name, should be:
System.out.println("My CMSC 131 instructor is Jan Plane.");
The line immediately after you insert the name of your TA (first name only) should be:
System.out.println("Some Java History:");

2/2/09   The project 0 is now available. The description of what needs to be done is available by the Projects menu tab to the left. The files you need are available in your CVS repository.

1/28/09   The university has just announced that it will open at 11am today because of the weather conditions. This means that the 10am lecture will not have their lecture today. The lab(discussion) sections for the 10am lecture will still meet and will be even more important than usual. I am working with the TAs to rearrange some material to make sure everything that is needed soon will be covered in the lab period. All other lecture/lab sections will meet as normally scheduled.

1/21/09   Welcome to CMSC 131 for the Spring 2009 Semester. We will have our first labs and lectures on Monday, January 26. See you there. Important announcements will appear here as the semester goes on. Be sure to look every day.
