CMSC 434            Homework #2            Spring 2017

The Joy of Java

Due on ELMS as a PDF by 11:59pm on Sunday, March 5th.

For this homework assignment, you will explore the concept of "joy" in relation to class projects, specifically in CMSC 131 and 132. They say that it is easy to find joy when times are good, and that the challenges is to find some while facing adversity.

We will consider the four spokes on Karen Holtzblatt's Wheel of Joy.
  • Accomplishment where your joy came from achieving some goal in life.
  • Connection where your joy came due to a sense of connection to, or collaboration with, a person or people at home or at work.
  • Identity where your joy was the result of developing or celebrating something that felt it was "you" in some way (hobbies are a common example).
  • Sensation where joy came from a pleasurable moment, where through vision or sound or motion.

  • Word Doc you can fill in with all of your answers, print to PDF, and upload to ELMS.

Task 1: Identify two times you found joy in your non-academic life when times were good and for each identify one or more of the four spokes of the Wheel of Joy most closely seems like the reason the time was joyful and provide a one or two sentence reason for each spoke you identified.

Task 2: Identify two times you found joy in your academic life and for each identify one or more of the four spokes of the Wheel of Joy most closely seems like the reason the time was joyful and provide a one or two sentence reason for each spoke you identified. This does not have to be during your college years if you have examples you'd rather share from middle school or high school.

Task 3: Based on your reflections that lead to the answers to the above two tasks, consider the question, "How would you make doing and submitting individual Java assignments in CMSC 131 and/or 132 more joyful in some way?" Come up with two ideas and for each, once again, identify one or more of the four spokes of the Wheel of Joy most closely explains why you think it would be joyful and provide a one or two sentence reason for each spoke you identified.
