E-Ticket Capacity Planning: How to Ride the E-Commerce Growth Curve

Author
Dr. Neil Gunther

Performance Dynamics Company
Castro Valley, California

Abstract
An 'E' ticket buys you the most thrilling rides at Disneyland. The astronaut Sally Ride described her first Shuttle launch as better than an 'E' ticket ride. The rapid growth of the Web and E-commerce services has all the allure of an 'E' Ticket ride: super-fast growth with the ever-present danger of exhausting server capacity.

In this tutorial, you will learn:

  • How to monitor server capacity metrics
  • How to extract the effective SHORT-term consumption of server capacity
  • How to predict the effective LONG-term growth rate
  • Architectural considerations for application scalability
This tutorial is based on the author's own techniques developed at one of the hottest websites in the world.

Who should attend?
Whether you think you're involved with E-commerce or not (and you probably are), this tutorial will be valuable if you are considering any kind of application migration, server consolidation or server procurement.

The presentation assumes little or no background in performance analysis or capacity planning but bringing your palmtops or laptops wouldn't hurt.

What is an E-Ticket?
"In the beginning, instead of purchasing one overall admission ticket to the Magic Kingdom , guests purchased ticket books. These books contained lettered tickets for various rides A, B, C, D, and E.

E tickets were for the BEST rides! The lettered tickets have long since gone away, but the term E-Ticket has always referred to the premiere attractions at the Magic Kingdom."
