Program Overview
The University of Maryland Dept of Computer Science Summer Outreach Program is a program for high school students going into the 12th grade that are interested in the field of computer science. The program includes an emphasis on encouraging females to the field of computer science. Note: male and females are encouraged to apply.
This program is offered by the Department of Computer Science at the University of Maryland at College Park and it is offered at no cost to the student (students are only responsible for any transportation arrangements). Notice this is not a residential program (students will commute every day). The Association for Women in Computing (AWC) is also supporting this program.
This program is very competitive and the number of spaces available is limited. Students with the strongest academic background are selected. Homeschooled students are encouraged to apply to this program.
Objectives
- To introduce students to the field of computer science so they can consider it as their major at the University of MD College Park (UMCP).
- To increase the number of women pursuing a computer science degrees at UMCP.
Applicant Qualications
- High school student going into 12th grade with GPA of at least 3.5 (non-weighted). IMPORTANT: The GPA value must be a value no larger than 4.0. If your school uses a system where GPAs are larger than 4.0, ask a teacher to convert the GPA to a 0 to 4.0 scale.
- Grades Transcript.

The next installment of the program will take place from August 8 to August 12, 2011. Classes will be take place from 9am to 5pm.
Directions to Campus/Classroom Information
To reach campus you can check the following link Campus Directions. Classes will take place in the Computer Science Instructional Center (CSI) room number 3117. A campus map can be found at Campus Map. In the map the building is in area E-4, and the building number is 406. Classes will start at 9am and end at 5pm.
FAQ
- 80% of the program will focus on what computer science is and its impact on society; 20% will be about computer programming using JavaScript.
- We only accept students going into the 12th grade.
- No textbooks are necessary (we will provide online materials).
- Students are responsible for food arrangements.
- Students can bring laptop to class if they have one, but no laptop is necessary for the class (we have a computer lab).
- We assume students have no previous computer programming experience.
