We highly recommend using a smart card with your sun ray terminal. It simplifies the login process, helps secure your session, and makes it very easy to transfer your session to another sun ray terminal.
Smart cards can be obtained from Staff World, AVW 4120. Please, only one smart card per person. If you need a replacement card, you will be charged for it, in the amount of $10.
To use a smart card, simply slide it into the slot in front of the sun ray, with the gold chip to the left and away from you. When properly inserted, a green light will illuminate on the front of the terminal and you should see the terminal issue you a new session. Log in and work normally.
When you are finished, need to move to another terminal, or need to leave temporarily, simply remove your smartcard. The session will detach from the terminal. It is still associated with your smart card. To return to work, simply reinsert the smart card into any sun ray terminal in the department and re-enter your password to unlock your session. Everything should be right where you left it.
This is handy for moving your work between your desk, a friend's desk, the TA office hours room, or any other sun ray terminal. It's also useful when you need to leave jobs running but need to leave the terminal free for someone else.
You can also use a smart card to temporarily borrow a terminal in use by someone else. Inserting the smart card issues you a new session. When you are finished, remove your smart card, and the former user can log back in and return to their pre-existing session.
Note that sessions can not be moved to a terminal running a different operating system - you can move from any solaris terminal to any other solaris terminal, or from a linux terminal to any other linux terminal, but not from solaris to linux or vice versa.
