Wireless laptop connections

The campus has a wireless network which you are welcome to use. You will need to provide your own wireless ethernet card.

For wireless setup instructions, visit the campus wireless page

http://www.oit.umd.edu/nts/noc/MAM.html

You should use the encrypted umd-secure network if at all possible. This network is encrypted.

THE CAMPUS WIRELESS umd NETWORK IS NOT USING ENCRYPTION. It is therefore IMPERATIVE that you use secure protocols to connect to and from ANYTHING while using the umd wireless network. DO NOT use POP, telnet, rlogin, rsh, or unencrypted IMAP. You will be radio-broadcasting your password to anyone within range unless you use ssh, encrypted IMAP, or other encrypted protocols.

We have set up a department VPN which will provide encryption for your wireless connection, but it will only do so if you use it ALL the time that you are connected to the wireless network. If you do not already have access to the VPN, please see http://www.cs.umd.edu/faq/vpn for setup instructions.
