Anonymous uploads

It is possible to have colleagues or friends anonymously upload data to you via the anonymous FTP server. In order to ensure system security and avoid becoming a distribution point for an assortment of illegal or unsavory materials, anonymous uploading is an unusual procedure.

First, you need to contact staff@cs.umd.edu and ask to have an FTP incoming directory set up for you. We will create a directory with your name on it under the FTP server's anonymously-writable subdirectory, /fs/ftp/incoming. Only you will be able to enter, view, or edit the contents of this directory.

Have someone upload a file to ftp.cs.umd.edu:/incoming/username, where username is your username. They will not be able to view or read any files in this directory, so they will not be able to list the files to verify that their upload succeeded. They will have to rely upon status messages from their FTP client. This is a security feature.

Once the file has been uploaded, you can retrieve it from any UNIX workstation by going to /fs/ftp/incoming/username. When you are done with these files, please remove them to free up space on the FTP server.

Files left in /fs/ftp/incoming for more than 30 days will be automatically deleted.
