Setting up Thunderbird with SSL-IMAP
These instructions are based on Thunderbird v1.5 for Windows
Setting the SMTP server
- Go to the Tools menu and click on Account Settings...
- At the bottom of the left sidebar, you should see the Outgoing
Server (SMTP). Select it and click Edit....
- The Server Name is smtp.cs.umd.edu.
- The default Port of 465 is correct.
- The Description field can be whatever you want.
- Under Security and Authentication, make sure that the Use name
and password box is checked.
- Make sure that your CS username is in the User Name box.
- Finally, set the Use secure connection radio button to SSL and
click OK.
That should take care of setting up your outgoing SMTP server.

- Choose IMAP as the type of server that you're using
- Type in the name of your incoming server. For most users, this is
imap.cs.umd.edu. If you read your mail on another machine,
you should already know the name of that machine. Enter it here.
- Click Next
- Type in your Incoming user name. This is the username that you
use to log in to the system that you're using as your IMAP server.
- Click Next.
- Enter the Account name. This is just a label for this email
account, it can be whatever you like.
- Click Next
- Click Finish.
- You should now see your newly created account along the left sidebar
of the Account Settings window. Click on Server Settings
under the new account name.
- Make sure that Use secure connection is set to SSL.
- Make sure that Use secure authentication is
not checked.
- Click OK.
That's it. You should be ready to go.
One final note: If you are getting warnings like the one below, you
probably still need to
import the CSD root certificate.
