Supported Windows systems
Supported department PCs should
already have the correct drivers and print queues installed.
If your supported windows PC is missing the cps4172 printer,
you may need to reboot
If you are having problems with a supported machine after rebooting,
please contact staff@cs.umd.edu.
Unsupported Windows (XP/2000) systems

Download the drivers from HP's web site. You want the HP Color
LaserJet 3800 PostScript driver.
- Double-click on the file to extract its contents. Pay
attention to where you are extracting these files, you'll need to
navigate to them later. The default location is C:\clj3800.
- Click Start -> Printers and Faxes for windows XP, or Start ->
Settings -> Printers for Windows 2000.
- Double-click on Add a printer
- Select Network printer
- Select Connect to a printer on the internet...
- In the URL box, enter
http://cprint.cs.umd.edu/printers/cps4172
Yes, the URL here is different than elsewhere in the FAQ,
due to a bug in the windows driver
- Click Next
- Select HP from the left column.
- Click on Have Disk
- Click on Browse to navigate to where you extracted the
driver files that you downloaded. (C:\clj3800 by default) and
select hpc3800d.inf
- Click Open
- Click OK
- Select HP Color Laserjet 3800 PS
- Click OK and wait for the driver to install.
- Choose No when prompted if you want this printer to be your default printer.
- Click Finish
Next configure the printer's extra hardware features:
- Click on Start -> Printers and Faxes
- Right-click on the new printer (e.g., cps4172 on http://cprint.cs.umd.edu)
- Select Properties
- Click the Device Settings tab
- Scroll down to Installable Options
- Click on Tray 3 and set it to Installed.
- Click on Duplex Unit and set it to Installed
- Click on Printer Memory and set it to 288 MB.
- Click Apply
- Scroll back up to the Form to Tray Assignment section.
- Click on Tray 3 and select Letter
- Click OK
Finally, set up default behavior:
- Right-click on the new printer (e.g., cps4172 on http://cprint.cs.umd.edu)
- Select Printing Preferences...
- Click on the Paper/Quality tab.
- Under Print Task Quick Sets, enter a new name (e.g., CS defaults)
- Under Paper Options, Size should be set to Letter
- Source should be Automatically Select
- Type is Plain
- Click on the Finishing tab.
- Make sure the Print on Both Sides box is checked.
The printer is smart enough not to duplex when printing on transparencies.
- At the top right of the page, click Save.
- Click Apply You must click Apply before
clicking OK to set these as the default preferences.
- Click OK
Remember that unsupported machines must be on the local network or
using the department VPN in order to print. Systems using the campus wireless network
are not considered to be on the local network, and must use the VPN.
