Disabling plain text passwords

Note: these instructions assume you are using Windows XP

  1. Open the windows control panel (Start menu -> Control Panel)
  2. Open the Administrative Tools
  3. Open Local Security Policy
  4. Under Security Settings, open Local Policies -> Security Options

  5. Scroll down to Microsoft network client: Send unencrypted password to third-party SMB servers

  6. If the Security Setting of this option is Disabled, then you already have the correct setting, you don't need to do anything, you're done.

    If this security option is Enabled, double-click it.

  7. Select the Disabled Radio button.

  8. Click OK
  9. If you have changed a security setting, you must reboot the system for the change to take effect.
