Mounting filesystems on department Windows machines

  1. From the Windows file browser, click on Tools and select Map Network Drive.

  2. In the Folder box, fill in the name of the samba server, samba.cs.umd.edu and the path that you want to mount. In the example, we're mounting the web directory, www, so the full path is \\samba.cs.umd.edu\www. If you would like to mount your personal web directory, use this path: \\samba.cs.umd.edu\wwwhome.

  3. Click on the link that allows you to Connect using a different user name. In almost all cases, the default username will be incorrect. You should enter your username, prefaced by umd-csd-nt, like so: umd-csd-nt\username

    You do not need to enter your password at this time, you'll be prompted for it when you initiate the connection.

  4. Click OK
  5. Click Finish
  6. When prompted for your username, enter your Department Windows password.
All done!

NOTE: If you have used your UNIX password in the past, or your Windows password doesn't work, you may have plaintext passwords enabled on your windows machine. We have used this method in the past, but are now trying not to do this, to improve security. Make sure you are not using plain text passwords and try connecting again.
