Setting up the CSD VPN client

Note: In order to use the department VPN, you must already have a department Windows or kerberos account and an internet connection.

Download the latest VPN client, for Windows 2000, XP, or Vista, MacOS X 10.5 and earlier, or Linux.
Note that due to export restrictions, the files above can only be directly downloaded if you are using the department's local network.

If you are not on the department's local network and wish to download the clients, you can use sftp to download the files through supported CS UNIX machines.

To download the files via sftp, you will need to have a valid CS UNIX account. You will also need a SSH/SFTP client, click here to download one.

This FAQ continues with instructions specific to Windows machines for the latest VPN client. Follow the links for instructions specific to MacOS X 10.4 and 10.5, MacOS X 10.6, Linux, or earlier version.

Double click on the client file you've just downloaded to extract the contents to a temporary location. Pay attention to where you're extracting the files, you will need to go to that directory for the next step.

Go to the directory into which you extracted the client files.

Double click on vpnclient_en.exe and follow the instructions for installation, including rebooting when necessary. Remember that you may need administrator privileges to perform this installation.

If you still have the old client installed, you will need to remove it. The setup program will do this automatically, just follow the prompts.

Once the client has been installed and the machine has rebooted, Start the VPN application from the Start menu:

Select New... from the Connection Entries menu and type in a name for the VPN connection and a description.

Enter the following information:

If you are authenticating with your CS department Windows password:

Host: vpn.cs.umd.edu
Name: csd
Password: sushisushi

-- OR --

If you are authenticating with your CS department Kerberos password:

Host: vpn.cs.umd.edu
Name: csd-kerb
Password: fishyfishy

Retype the password to confirm it -- This doesn't authenticate you, it just gives you the default department VPN behavior.

Click Save

Double-click on your new vpn connection.

Enter your CS NT username and password.

You should now be authenticated and connected through the VPN. Check by right-clicking on the little padlock icon on the toolbar and selecting Statistics... to make sure.
