Note: In order to use the department VPN, you must already have a department Windows NT/2000 account and an internet connection.
This FAQ continues with instructions specific to the earlier version of the VPN client for Windows machines. Click here for instructions specific to the latest version of the VPN client or other OS platforms.
Double click on the client file to extract the contents to a temporary location. Pay attention to where you're extracting the files, you will need to go to that directory for the next step.
Go to the directory into which you extracted the client files.
Double click on setup.exe and follow the instructions for installation, including rebooting when necessary. Remember that you may need administrator privileges to perform this installation.
If you still have the old client installed, you will need to remove it. The setup program will do this automatically, just follow the prompts.
Once the client has been installed and the machine has rebooted, Start the VPN application from the Start menu:
Click on the New... button and type in a name for the VPN connection, then click Next
Enter the hostname, newvpn.cs.umd.edu, and click Next
Select the Group Access Information radio button and fill in the group information. The group is csd, and the password is sushisushi -- this doesn't authenticate you, it just gives you the default department VPN behavior.
Click Next
Click Finish
Make sure your new connection is selected, and Click Connect
12) Enter your CS NT username, password, and UMD-CSD-NT as the domain and click OK.
You should now be authenticated and connected through the VPN. Check by right-clicking on the little padlock icon on the toolbar and checking your connection status to make sure.
