Reception Honoring Ben Shneiderman
On May 31, 2001 a reception was held (as part of pre-Symposium day events) at the Rossborough Inn on the University of Maryland, College Park's campus to celebrate Ben Shneiderman's 25 years of being on the faculty at the University of Maryland, College Park. The gathering was hosted by Dianne Martin (Chair of the ACM Special Interest Group on Computers & Society) and several faculty members from the Department of Computer Science. At this event, Dianne Martin presented Ben Shneiderman with the ACM SIGCAS Making A Difference Award for his persistent efforts to combine scientific excellence with social concerns. His contributions to computer science research in software engineering, database systems, human-computer interaction, and information visualization are complemented by his thoughtful discussions of ethical values in technology, universal usability, and educational technology strategies.
