Krist Wongsuphasawat wins the Interactive Category of the Information is Beautiful Award
In a contest sponsored by The Guardian to show European debt crisis over time, Krist's visualization, cleverly called European Bubbles wins the Interactive Category. The award committee described his visualization as, "Amazing, slick and full-featured interactive from Krist gives loads of room for exploratory fun, data-digging and finding new angles on the crisis."

Ben Bederson elected to "CHI Academy"
Ben Bederson was elected to the "CHI Academy," SIGCHI's recognition. He will be inducted into the Academy in May at CHI2012. The CHI Academy is an honorary group of individuals who have made substantial contributions to the field of human-computer interaction. These are the principal leaders of the field, whose efforts have shaped the disciplines and/or industry, and led the research and/or innovation in human-computer interaction.

NSF posted a Discovery feature of Action Science Explorer
Cody Dunne, Robert Gove, Ben Shneiderman, Judith Klavans, and Bonnie Dorr's work on Action Science Explorer, a new visualization method which makes research more organized and efficient, was featured in a Discovery posted on the National Science Foundation website.

Krist Wongsuphasawat was interviewed by a reporter from the Thai embassy about the HCI field, his research, and the HCIL Symposium. English and Thai versions of Krist's interview can be found online, as can a discussion, in Thai, about the Symposium and interesting research studies of UM students.

Jen Golbeck becomes new HCIL Director
The HCIL would like to congratulate Jen Golbeck on becoming the lab’s new director and thank Allison Druin for serving as director for 5 years. The transition took place immediately after the HCIL’s 28th Annual Symposium, which was a huge success. We are grateful to all of our past directors, proud of our accomplishments under them, and excited for the years to come with our new director.

Ben Shneiderman Interviewed on KOA Radio
Ben Shneiderman was interviewed by Dave Logan and Lois Melkonian for KOA Radio for a national broadcast. He was interviewed about information visualization, based on the NY Times article from the previous Sunday.

UMD student poster wins AAAS 2011 Student Poster Competition
Yakov Kronrod, Chang Hu, Olivia Buzek, and Alex Quinn's poster, entitled Using Monolingual Crowds to Improve Translation, won the Math, Technology, and Engineering category at the 2011 AAAS Student Poster Competition.

The poster reported work done on a crowdsourcing and translation project led by Ben Bederson and Philip Resnik, which is supported by NSF and a Google Research Award.

Ben Shneiderman mentioned in NY Times Business Section on 4/3/2011
The New York Times published an article about data visualization, called "When the Data Struts Its Stuff," which mentioned Ben Shneiderman's work on Treemaps with the Hive Group.
