Ben Shneiderman selected as Graduate Faculty Mentor of the Year
The Graduate Faculty Mentor of the Year Award is intended to recognize outstanding achievement in mentoring by recognizing those faculty members who have made exceptional contributions to a student’s (or students’) graduate education and experience. This year, 163 graduate students nominated 33 faculty for the Graduate Faculty Mentor of the Year Award. Ben was nominated for by 10 of his current PhD students and graduates. The awardees will be recognized at the Annual Graduate School Fellowships and Award Celebration on May 7, 2013.
2013 Greg Herrington Award for Excellence in Visualization Research given to work led by John Alexis Guerra-Gomez
Work led by John Alexis Guerra-Gomez has received the 2013 Greg Herrington Award for Excellence in Visualization Research from the Transportation Research Board of the National Academies. The paper, "TreeVersity: Interactive Visualizations for Comparing Hierarchical Datasets," included these authors: John Alexis Guerra-Gomez, Audra Buck-Coleman, Michael L. Pack, Catherine Plaisant, and Ben Shneiderman. The paper will be published in the Journal of the Transportation Research Board.
Four UMD Papers Received Awards from CHI 2013 Conference
Of the nearly 2,000 papers submitted to the ACM SIGCHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems (CHI), the premier international conference on human-computer interaction, four UMD papers were recognized with an award. Two UMD submissions were selected as Best Papers -- only 1% of all submissions receive this award -- and two other submissions were recognized with Best Paper Honorable Mentions.
HCIL Papers, Tutorials, and Workshops at CHI 2013 Conference
At CHI this year, the HCIL will be presenting 12 accepted full/short papers, running two workshops (Personal Informatics in the Wild and Grand Challenges in Text Entry), and one tutorial on Designing with and for Children. The CHI conference draws up to 3000 people with an acceptance rate of about 20%. This year, there are 316 full papers and 76 shorter notes. Come join us in Paris!

HCIL Hackerspace Opens
The new HCIL hackerspace for making, creating, and breaking is now open. All HCILers are welcome (we're next to the main HCIL room).
