It would be difficult to speak of other pioneers of user interfaces without mentioning Vannevar Bush. An engineer, a scientist and a visionary, Vannevar Bush is most famous amongst the computer community for his proposed storehouse of knowledge called the "Memex". A memex is an easily accessible and extendible database built into a simple desk. This mechanized personal library of informational materials can be consulted expeditiously. Bush envisioned new trails of information tied together by association and passed from generation to generation. This linking of documents by association is the key element of the memex and later became what we now recognize as hypertext. | |
