Bill Gates is the chairman and chief software architect of Microsoft Corporation, the world's largest distributor of software for PC computers.  Chances are favorable that you use one or more of their products.  Before Gates became one of the wealthiest men in the world, he began much like other pioneers of user interfaces did.  Discovering his interest in computers when he was 13, Gates went on to study at Harvard University where he developed a high-level programming language ("BASIC") for the first microcomputer.  Gates left Harvard two years later to pursue Microsoft Corporation, a company he co-founded with close friend Paul Allen.  Bill Gates is also the founder of Corbis and is the author of two best-selling books, The Road Ahead and Business @ the Speed of Thought.  Microsoft's flagship product, Windows, is the most successful and popular user-interface in use today.  Microsoft may not have developed some of their products from scratch, but Gates has helped many ideas reach commercial viability through his vision and leadership.  With success and enormous wealth comes widespread criticism, but nonetheless Bill Gates will remain one of the most influential people in bringing computers to the masses.
