During a time when computers were primarily used for number crunching, Joseph Carl Robnett Licklider had a different approach to computing.  Surprisingly alone in his vision, Licklider imagined a world where man and machine could work together.  This "symbiosis", as Licklider called it, would allow for personal computer workstations and online communities.  Licklider is one of the most influential people in computer science and is the author of "Man-Computer Symbiosis" and co-author of "The Computer as a Communication Device".  While employed by ARPA (Advanced Research Projects Agency), Licklider built the first computer network to link the research community.  He called it the "ARPANET"; we call it the Internet.
