Alan Mathison Turing would not have been picked by his high school teachers to be the father of modern computing.  Turing always did well in school but consistently deviated from established rules and traditions.  His rebellious nature augmented a desire within himself to explore the world of mathematics from a different angle - his own.  A mathematician by name and philosopher at heart, Turing explored the nature of mathematical algorithms and applied the concepts towards digital computing.  His research into the relationship between machines and nature created the field of artificial intelligence.  Turing is recognized for envisioning a machine that processes sequential commands in a state table, later called a "Turing Machine", much like digital computers work today.  Like other early pioneers of computing, Turing's place in the history of user interfaces cannot be overlooked.
