Andries Van Dam is the founder of the Computer Science department for Brown University.  He earned a masters and a doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania in the engineering sciences.  His research is primarily concerned with computer graphics, text processing and hypermedia systems.  He has also worked for over thirty years developing systems for creating and reading electronic books for use in education and research.  Andries Van Dam is committed to developing better user interfaces, remarking that the traditional GUI has not progressed much beyond the original design by Xerox PARC.  Dr. Van Dam's current research is immersive virtual reality.  Current display technology lacks the ability to give the user an adequate visual model for tasks like modeling large-scale molecular nanostructures.  Spatially immersive display technology surrounds the user in computer-generated environments responsive to the user's actions, orientation and perspective.
