Network Management

Pointers to relevant HCIL papers and past projects

Catherine Plaisant,  January 31, 1999

Even though HCIL does not have a special focus on Network Management, we have had several projects in the past that were relevant to Network Management.

In 1992-94 we worked on satellite network configuration with Hughes Network Systems.

94-07 - Kumar, H., Plaisant, C., Teittinen, M., Shneiderman, B. (June 1994)
Visual information management for network configuration
CS-TR-3288, CAR-TR-716, ISR-TR-94-45

(Video avialable from HCIL as part of the 1994 HCIL Video report.)

In 1994-95 we built prototypes of business network monitoring interfaces with General Electric Information Systems.

BizView:Managing business and network alarms
(Summary of the video available from HCIL as part of the 1995 HCIL Video report.)

In addition, our strong work on visualization of hierarchies is also relevant to network management,
in particular:

95-12     Kumar , H.P., Plaisant, C., Shneiderman, B. (March 1995)
Browsing hierarchical data with multi-level dynamic queries and pruning
CS-TR-3474, CAR-TR-772, ISR-TR-95-53.
International Journal of Human-Computer Studies, Volume 46, No. 1, 103-124 (January 1997).

94-10      Kumar, H. (December 1994)
Browsing hierarchical data with multi-level dynamic queries and pruning
105 page dissertation, see 95-12 (CS-TR-3474) for condensed version. ISR-MS-95-5.

Also relevant to network managers eager to reduce network loads due to repeated queries:  our project on Query Previews.
