Digital Libraries for Children:
Computational Tools that
Support Children as Researchers
The
University of Maryland has begun a partnership with elementary school children
(ages 5-10) and teachers from Yorktown Elementary School to develop a children’s
digital library environment containing rich multimedia resources.
Our project will develop visual interfaces that support young children
in querying, browsing, and organizing multimedia information. In
doing so, we will work with children as “design partners” to develop new
digital library technologies that support the learning challenges of young
children. Throughout our design experience, we hope to understand
how new technologies can have an effect on learning, communicating, and
collaborating in school environments.
This
3-year research project is supported by the
National
Science Foundation's Digital Library Initiative-2

Our digital collection of video, text and images is being developed
with the generous support of the Discovery Channel,
the Patuxant Wild Life Research
Center, and the Baltimore Learning Community/Maryland Electronic Learning Community
project (BLC/MELC), a
Technology Innovation Challenge Grant Project funded by the
U.S. Department of Education. The BLC/MELC project, a collaboration
between the Baltimore City Public School System, the University of
Maryland, and Johns Hopkins University as well as several private
sector partners, is designed to investigate how an electronic learning
community could be created around the development and use of a
multimedia digital library for teacher-generated lesson plans and
activities.
