In this dissertation, the Elastic Windows approach with improved spatial layout and rapid multi-window operations is presented as an alternative to the current window management strategies. In Elastic Windows, windows are organized in a hierarchical fashion, depicting semantic relationships, on a space-filling tiled layout similar to treemaps . Hierarchical window organization provides hierarchical contexts for efficient management of information as a basis for multi-window operations. Multi-window operations enable efficient task-switching and reorganization of the windows with orienting elastic layout dynamics. In Elastic Windows, multi-window operations are achieved by issuing operations on window groups.
The Elastic Windows approach has been successfully applied to e-mail management , personal role management and world-wide web browsing applications (Figure ).
