Welcome from the Chair

Welcome to CS@UMD! I am proud to have been a member of the University of Maryland’s computer science department for over twenty years. The CS program has consistently ranked in the top 15 departments nationally. Established in 1973, the department has pioneered several research areas and our accomplished faculty consists of well recognized, award-winning leaders in the field.

Our department has about fifty faculty members with over 200 graduate students conducting research on diverse areas of computing. I see our students and alumni as our greatest assets -- they have achieved success as researchers, innovators and educators. Undergraduate students can apply for a competitive departmental honors track and the country’s first undergraduate honors cybersecurity program, as well as build on knowledge gained in the classroom by attending seminar opportunities and a distinguished lecturer series. Our best undergraduates are recruited by top Ph.D. programs, with several students winning prestigious NSF fellowships. Several of our Ph.D. alumni are professors at high ranked universities, researchers at top industrial labs and software engineers at successful Internet start-ups.

The Department of Computer Science and the University of Maryland Institute for Advanced Computer Studies (UMIACS) also work with corporations through our “Corporate Partners in Computing Program.” The purpose of this venture is to foster collaborative research and entrepreneurial opportunities with local and regional companies, and to provide our undergraduate and graduate students with internship and full-time employment opportunities.

In addition to our talented faculty, students and alumni, our talented staff provides the operating support which provides us with the freedom to achieve our goals and meet our high standards in academics and innovative research. The university’s proximity to Washington D.C. offers unparalleled access for professional and academic growth. The surrounding metropolitan area is an epicenter for research opportunities to collaborate with organizations such as NIST, NIH and NSA. Whether you are a prospective student, corporate partner, alumnus/alumna or friend of the department, thank you for your continuing interest in CS@UMD. I send you my best wishes and hope that you will contact me should you be interested in furthering your involvement with the department.
