TITLE: ``Nested Defaults''

ABSTRACT:

Classical default theory fails to capture the meaning of nested generalizations, i.e. sentences like ``Cretans are liars'', where the notion of ``liar'' is itself a generalization. I present an extension of a classical default theory where such ``nested defaults'' can be represented and worked with. I also suggest how the theory can be applied to solve a problem of interacting defaults.

Everyone is welcome to attend.
